2 shot in Father's Day gun swap accident

COOS BAY, Ore. - A man swapping pistols with his dad during a Father's Day visit accidentally shot himself in the hand and his girlfriend in the thigh with a .44 caliber revolver.

The two were taken by car to the hospital for treatement. Hospital staff contacted the Coos County Sheriff's Office.

The bullet hit the 27-year-old man in the finger and hit his 21-year-old girlfriend in the thigh.

Deputies said the shooting happened as the man inspected the .44 revolver.

Three Eastern Washington University seniors had no idea their rental home was about to be targeted by a couple of career criminals with convictions for bank robbery, theft and other charges. Police say the armed men entered the home seeking riches. "I think these people thought there might be more valuables in the house than there actually were," said police detective John Miller. The alleged intruders did not find gold, but they did find lead. One of the college students retrieved a firearm and shot one of the men, causing both suspects to flee.
