Illinois Concealed Carry Ban Could Be The Nation's Last
As a concealed carry measure headed to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's desk Tuesday night, gun rights activists in Illinois applauded their neighbors to the north--and slammed local lawmakers for making Illinois the last state in the nation to uphold an outright ban on concealed weapons.

"This good fortune enjoyed by the citizens of Wisconsin underscores the ongoing plight of their neighbors to the south," the Illinois State Rifle Association said in a statement. "Once the Wisconsin governor signs concealed carry into law, Illinois will be the only state in the nation that prohibits its citizens from protecting themselves with the most effective tool available – the defensive firearm."

Citizens of IL applauding cincealed carry in WI.

But nobody really wants it, the public is really against it. Everybody knows that.

:sarcasm: thingy for that last statement, just in case I needed it.

1. Good for them! Now, it would be nice if the states that technically have CC but
throw up unwarranted barriers and road-blocks would liberalize their own laws as well...

3. It will happen...
...given enough time to be worked through the courts. Just a pity that so much money will be wasted by state politicians having to defend themselves from lawsuits they brought upon themselves.

2. Concealed carry is a bad idea unless and until they get the
registration/background check in a lot better working order. Too many people who have no business even owning a gun will be allowed to carry it practically anyplace.

5. Do you know what getting a concealed carry license require?
Fingerprinting, background check by FBI and local police/sheriff, classroom and range time (Texas Requirement)

"will be allowed to carry it practically anyplace."

Do a little research on where you can carry concealed in say, Texas or Florida and then get back with that statement.

8. In Florida only 168 concealed weapons permits have been revoked ...
for a crime involving the use of a firearm after the license was issued in 24 years. Many of those licenses were revoked because the bearer carried his firearm by accident into a restricted area.

During that period of time Florida issued 1,992,296 carry permits and currently 819,135 are valid.

I would say that the background check Florida uses works extremely well.

10. If you can't qualify to own a gun, you can't get a CCW permit in any state in the USA
You should read up on the subject.

And wait for the rest of the country to return to some measure of sanity.

9. Name just one state that decided that allowing honest people to carry concealed ...
was a bad idea and repealed the law.

13. Washington state: 50 years of "shall issue" and counting...
If that's any indication of things to come, the period in which discretionary licensing for concealed carry was the national default* will turn out to have been the historical aberration.

* - Created by the "NRA compromise" of the 1920s and 1930s; in order to prevent more states from imposing firearms laws like New York's Sullivan Act, the NRA accepted severely restrictive discretionary licensing systems for concealed carry in exchange for the states not requiring licenses to merely possess a handgun.

7. Sometimes, as the article mentions, Illinois lawmakers do appear to side with the criminals ...

The ISRA hopes Wisconsin's approval of concealed carry legislation will help their case, and are currently behind two federal lawsuits that "address Illinois' persistent denial of the law-abiding citizen's right to self defense." The organization has accused lawmakers of siding with "bad guys" and "letting the good people of Illinois take it on the chin from murderers, robbers, rapists and the increasingly-popular flash-mobs."

If I made my living by mugging people, I would definitely move to Chicago or possibly New York City where only the rich, celebrities and the politically connected are able to easily obtain a permit to carry.

Singer Marc Anthony is one of dozens of celebs, millionaires and high-profile athletes authorized to carry a concealed weapon in the city, records show.

Other big names licensed to carry a gun include actor Robert De Niro, shock jock Howard Stern and supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis. Billionaire Donald Trump and his son, Donald Jr.; celebrity lawyer David Breitbart, and artificial-heart inventor Robert Jarvik can also carry steel, police records reveal.

***snip***

The NYPD charges a nonrefundable $340 to file an application for a gun permit and between $94 and $106 for the collection of fingerprints, even before a background check is begun.
