Campus gun bill denied vote, unlikely to pass (NRA/GOP over-reach fail - Nevada)
http://www.lvrj.com/news/campus-gun-bill-denied-vote-unlikely-to-pass-123195343.html

A bill that would make it easier for people with concealed weapons permits to carry guns on Nevada's college and university campuses likely won't make it out of the Legislature, to the dismay of an assault victim who made a last ditch attempt to sway lawmakers.

Senate Bill 231 didn't get a vote in the Assembly Committee on Judiciary Sunday morning despite comments earlier by Chairman William Horne, D-Las Vegas, who previously said he wouldn't block the bill.

"I'm not going to bring it up," Horne said after the committee went into recess Sunday without a vote on the measure.

Amanda Collins, a concealed weapons permit holder who was without her gun the night in 2007 when she was sexually assaulted by James Biela in a University of Nevada, Reno parking garage, attended the judiciary meeting hoping to persuade Horne to hold a vote.

Even in the redest of red states these POS GOP/NRA guns-on-campus bills have failed - AZ, TX, TN, LA and now NV

No one wants this shit

yup

13. Yeah, stupid fucking victim, what does she know.
<sarcasm on>

She doesn't have your omniscient wisdom to know what would happen in your fantasy world, She just has to base her judgement on the real events untainted by your far sighted wisdom.

Do you even begin to realize what an pompous ass you sound like?

FWIW, no one here ever said "packing pistols is the answer to everything" but we'd all love to see any examples you have of that kind of claim. We'll wait.

I can't speak for everyone here ... but I'm guessing that more people trust the opinion and POV of the woman that was actually assaulted than some keyboard commando with all the answers and a twisted agenda.

In the meantime "better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a possible fool than to open and remove all doubt" applies here.

15. A firearm is a tool that provides a person a means of self-defense
There are many other tools that could be included in the self-defense toolset - none of them are perfect, foolproof, or "the answer to everything" (which no one has ever claimed). I argue that responsible adults have the right to decide for themselves which tools to use/carry, and what will best suit their individual needs in various situations. For some that set will include a firearm, for others, not.

Your characterizations of the victims of violent crime are simply despicable...

5. Of course the blow back will be
the "red" states (which are really varying shades of purple) will turn even more red. I can already see the campaign ad of Horne's opposition, "Misogynist from sin city that coddles rapists while denying women the means to defend themselves." If your friends at Brady are so progressive, where are the Democrats on their board? I am curious why you actually oppose the idea, or do you have a logical reason?

11. The operative word that you left out of your post....
Sorry - these POS gun bills are not passing in red states

The operative word that you left out of your post is YET

In many states - Texas, Arizon, and now Nevada - passage of student/faculty concealed carry bills have only been defeated by parlaimentary tricks which will only energize pro-gun rights advocates and which they will be able to agitate against (often Democratic) incumbents in the next state legislative elections.

Just as concealed carry took multiple efforts in multiple legislative sessions. Each defeat, closer than the previous time, an effective wedge-issue which pro-gun rights activists utilize too often to the detriment of Democratic office-holders who then got picked off one-by-one. I can think of no reason why we should contineu to provide rethuglicans this crude bludgeoning tool with which they are only too happy beat our candidates - and to such obvious effect.

19. Or require a higher level of training to get an endorsement on their carry permit ...
A guy that drives an 18 wheeler has a endorsement on his driver's license and has to pass a much more difficult test they typical motorist.

Requirements could be set up for a campus endorsement on a concealed carry permit which might require psychological testing, schooling that is designed around the carry and legitimate use of a firearm in a campus environment and a far more difficult test on the shooting range.

26. The schooling and training I am thinking about would be similar to what is required
to become a member auxiliary police officer in Florida. I envision a similar course perhaps half as long.

Florida auxiliary officers, deputies, and troopers have a current minimum training mandate of 319 hours. Again, the training must be taken within an approved basic academy setting. It includes some of the same “high liability” (as it is called in Florida) courses taught to fully certified officers including 80 hours for firearms, 80 hours for defensive tactics, and 40 hours for first aid. The 48 hour vehicle operations course is open to local discretion and may be eliminated for a 271 hour total training requirement.

Perhaps you have a concrete objection to this we have yet to hear. Judging by some of the replies,

'empirical evidence' = 'repeatedly claiming it's a bad idea without quite specifying why' for more than a few people...

29. Actually, many of us do want it.
And the AZ bill passed the legislature. It was rejected by Gov. Brewer because it had been chopped up so badly it basically did not meet the claimed intent. In effect, she sent it back and said "Fix it". It will be fixed and passed next year, I'm quite sure.

And you will weep and moan and never volunteer to provide security on public campuses.

No one wants this shit

I bet Amanda Collins wants it.

But you're probably right that James Biela doesn't.

"In October of 2007, while walking to her car after a night class, Collins was grabbed from behind in a university parking garage less than 300 yards from a campus police office. The school’s “gun-free” designation meant nothing to James Biela, a serial rapist with a gun of his own, who saw Collins as an easy target. “He put a firearm to my temple,” she recounted, “clocked off the safety, and told me not to say anything, before he raped me.”"

Policies like Jpak supports means every victim of violent crime will end up like Amanda. The weak will be at the mercy of the strong.

It is about as far from Progressive as you can get.
