Vote on guns in bars will provide ammo for Democrats

You might find me bellied up to the bar at The Old Bag of Nails or Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in uptown Westerville, but you won't find me there for long if my state representative walks through the door.

There's a good chance Anne Gonzales will be packing heat, and I prefer my beer without guns.

Before 53 Republicans and three Democrats in the Ohio House voted Thursday to pass a bill allowing gun-permit holders to carry their concealed weapons into bars, restaurants and open-air arenas that serve alcohol, Gonzales fashioned herself as the second coming of Annie Oakley.

In a floor speech, she complained that she can carry her gun into Einstein Bros. Bagels but not into Lindey's restaurant in German Village because it sells alcohol.

GOP/NRA over-reach will have its consequences in 2012

1. Actually, the NRA seems to have a pretty good track record lately.
All those pro-gun Democrats that the NRA supported in 2010, were by-and-large replaced by pro-gun Republicans.

I don't think getting on the wrong side of the NRA is going to be very helpful in 2012.

You'd better hope some of your gun control favorites campaign and focus on other issues...

2. From what you said, being pro-gun did not help the Dems...
so what's your point?

That's true, but it certainly didn't hurt them.

Unfortunately unemployment from the left-over Bush economy and right-wing hysteria over the health care law were much bigger factors in 2010.

I just don't think gun control is going to be a very pivotal issue in 2012. (At least I hope its not.)

I'd rather 2012 be a referendum on union-busting, but that's just me.

3. "past performance is not a indicator of future success"
or words to that effect

If the GOP/NRA wants to antagonize suburban Security Moms, they do so at their own peril.

yup

5. LOL @ Security Moms.
Edited on Sun May-15-11 02:26 PM by LAGC
How many moms (soccer, security, or otherwise) are out there trolling the bar scene anyway? Isn't that more of a past-time for single ladies without kids?

6. Anne Gonzales, the loony Repub at the core of this article,
complained that being allowed to bring her gun into Einstein Brothers Bagels is not enough.

No sane person is happy to find out that the person in line behind them at the bagel shop is packing heat, especially if that person shares the fear-and-doom mentality of the gun proliferationists.

8. Many "suburban Security Moms" are getting concealed carry licenses ...
even with martial arts training, a female is at a disadvantage when she faces a much larger and stronger male attacker. A firearm can neutralize this disadvantage. More and more women are realizing this.

Concealed Handgun Course Sees Increase in Female Students
Harrisonburg, Va.

***snip***

Donald Tumblin has been a concealed handgun instructor for nearly 20 years, and says he has seen an increase in the number of women taking the course.

"When you talk about firearms, everybody seems to put it in perspective as a man's sport. But it really isn't, I find that more ladies are getting involved, more of them want to get into the course," says Tumblin.

The shooting ability of the women definitely shows it's not just a man's sport.

"It's really surprising. Most of these ladies perform real good. Actually better than some of the men," says Tumblin.

My daughter has a concealed weapons permit and because of her problems with a stalker a year ago, many of her female friends are planning to get a carry permit. Some already have a loaded handgun in their car and have experience shooting so a carry permit is a logical step.

16. It is the 11th game of the season. Would YOU bet even money on the 1980 Saints to win?
Since many won't catch the reference, in 1980 the New Orleans Saints lost all of their games except one.

Past performance IS an indicator of future performance, just not a guarantee.

4. F.U.D.
The primary diet of far too many political creatures of all stripes.

I'd like to see some politicians work purely with actual facts. It'd be shocking, but I'm sure we could all get used to it.

10. Bars are mostly a red herring. The biggest issue is carry in restaurants
Edited on Sun May-15-11 06:26 PM by benEzra
that may serve alcohol.

Here in NC, if you are carrying legally, you have to somehow ascertain from outside the door of the restaurant if they have a wine list, and if they do you are not allowed to set foot inside even if neither you nor anyone in your group is going to order wine. Most of the "ZOMG GUNZ IN BARZ!!!" brouhaha is about bills that attempt to address that issue, usually by allowing carry in establishments that serve alcohol but prohibiting anyone who is carrying from drinking (and there is a bill attempting to do that here in NC this year).

In Florida, where I used to live, the law was that you could carry in a restaurant that served alcohol, but could not sit at the bar in a restaurant with a bar, and could not carry in any establishment in which more than 50% of revenues are derived from alcohol sales. That was a pretty reasonable compromise, I think; it certainly beats the heck out of what we have here in NC at the moment.

12. Only ammo to shoot themselves in the foot
Which Dems are real good at when it comes to guns issue.

In PA I can take my gun in to a bar. Blood isn't running in the aisles of Applebee's, Olive Garden, TGIFriday's or any other restaurant that serves alchohol here.

The law will happen in Ohio as well and if Dems are smart they will not try to revisit it.

15. And those consequences will be more votes for the GOP.
You love to call them morans but they beat the crap out of us in 2010. Because the NRA made huge gains in congress and in state legislatures I believe that much of that vote was over guns.
