Good news from CT - ban on "large-capacity" magazines is dead.
Another win for the good guys.

:toast: :bounce: :toast: :bounce:

The proposal (any proposal), to ban "large capacity" magazines is bad enough, but what was really insidious about this particular bill, is that it would have required any citizens currently in possession of LC mags, to surrender them to the police within 90 days of the law taking effect.

Failure to do so would result in felony charges.

Bill banning large-capacity ammunition magazines conspicuously absent from judiciary committee agenda

Today's the final day for the judiciary committee to approve bills and the panel has a monster agenda of more than 50 proposals to plow through by 5 p.m.

One item that's missing: S.B. 1094, which would make it illegal to own large-capacity ammunition magazines -- those capable of holding 10 rounds or more.

The bill, arguably the most controversial to be raised this legislative session, brought hundreds of gun owners to the Capitol last month.

"Over 200 people from all walks of life came and testified against it and I think they made their case,'' state Sen. John Kissel, the ranking Republican on the panel, said this morning.

At this point, he said, the bill is "basically dead,'' although, like any proposal, it could be raised as an amendment before the House or Senate.

8. Why do we want citizens to have large capacity magazines?
So they can more easily shoot congresspersons and innocent bystanders?

9. Your right....
That's what the police, private corporations and select citizens are for. If anyone needs to easily shoot congresspersons and innocent bystanders, it's them.

That's why they wrote exceptions into the law for those select people.

10. Sigh...
First, define "large." Loughner had a 30+ round magazine, but the CT law sought to ban anything over 10. Second, if shooting "congresspersons and innocent bystanders" is the only purpose for magazines with a capacity over 10, why do police and the military use them? Third, horrific death tolls have been racked up by shooters using magazines with a capacity of fewer than 10 rounds: Patrick Sherrill, about whom the phrase "going postal" was coined, used two Colt 1911 .45 pistols with a capacity of 7 rounds each to kill 14 people. He reloaded.

In other words, your snark fails on every level.

24. The law proposed to ban and confiscate standard factory magazines
for the most popular civilian guns in the United States. Turn them in within 90 days, or else.

Calling anything over 10 rounds "large capacity" is like calling any abortion after 10 weeks "late term." It isn't.

Not only can they be useful for self-defense, but they are used in crime so rarely as to almost unheard-of.

Your meme, it fails.

It's a pretty big news story, but I can't find a single thread on DU about it.

There's still plenty more where that came from with regards to defeating pending gun control legislation and overturning existing gun control legislation.

Care to place any bets on which side is going to win?

18. Don't hold your breath for a retraction
Right now he's furiously going through google trying to find proof that all of those D's are probably really blue dogs or that one of them had an uncle that voted or Reagan in 1980 and as a result none of them are "Real Dems" as we've oft been lectured about.

Sooner or later he'll run into the same issue that others have that tried to use Google to produce multiple news stories of gun crime/children/schools/families etc. But rather than explain it or provide any kind of heads up, let's just let him stumble into the issues on his own.

This was a bill to ban previously legal items. Meaning we already had them.
