Armed burglars shoot dog, homeowner shoots burglars.

L.I Resident Shoots at Trio of Burglars, Killing 1

SNIP FIRST PARAGRAPH

Three men, one armed with a .22 caliber rifle, forcibly entered the house just after midnight, police said. One of the men shot the resident's pit bull dog, police said.

That's when the resident, armed with a shotgun, opened fire on the burglars. One suspect, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second suspect, 25-year-old Justin Benkov of Mastic, is in critical condition. The third suspect fled and was caught a short time later. Philipe Robinette, of Aquebogue, was charged with burglary and will be arraigned tomorrow. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

The dog is expected to survive

There is a certain anti-gun poster who has stated that a big dog is all the home protection anybody needs. Sometimes, Fido needs some help.

1. Good thing the dog didn't notice, or they would have been in deep shit.

2. I'm glad the dog
is expected to survive.

I suppose if I lived in a higher crime neighborhood I'd have both a dog and a gun. But since I don't, I have neither.

3. Good call on your part
You have made a active choice, a good thing, regardless of what it is.

In my case I do not have a dog due to the neighborhood and also open carry at home due to the neighborhood. Then again, my neighbors are cougars (the four footed feline kind).

at least be nice enough to include a link to said article.

Also, many of us don't know what L.I. stands for, so please reference a location that is meaningful to those of us that are somewhat ignorant.

The above happened on Long Island, NY

5. And if there "were no guns" as many wish...
And if there were no guns, as many here wish, we would have had one man and a dog up against 3 assailants.

The weak would be at the mercy of the strong.

7. Ever seen 3 unarmed assailants face off against a mad home owner with a machete.

Truthfully, when someone enters your house -- just about anything the homeowner does is fair in my opinion. Although, I have very little or nothing in my house -- other than inhabitants -- worth killing someone for. Now, shooting some kid for stealing a pink flamingo off the front lawn or lawnmower out of the shed doesn't justify blasting away in my opinion.

8. Trade gun fights for sword fights.
First of all, if the homeonwer has a machete, there's no reason why the assailants would not avail themselves to similar weaponry.

But even so, you're still reduced to a physical contest of strength against your attackers. The sword allowed the medieval knight to hack down peasants with relative ease, but they could still pull him down from his horse and kill him, especially when they brought pikes to the fight.

You can choose to return to the middle ages and trade gun fights for sword fights if you want, but myself, I'll stick with a firearm. I'm not as spry as I once was.

42. Yes. A .22 has very little stopping power but can still be lethal.
Are you aware the the Israeli Mossad and Mafia hit men use .22s. In fact the Mossad uses .22 shorts. The reason why they are favored is that they can be truly silenced. Get close to the subject and shoot him several times in the brain.

But we who carry for self-defense are concerned with stopping power. That means the ability of a bullet to incapacitate a subject so that he is no longer a threat. For that a larger caliber is better. Since the brain is a hard target to hit in a gunfight we aim for center mass and need a harder hitting bullet than a .22 to incapacitate the threat.

11. Not everyone is equally able to defend themselves
machete or not.

Most weapons require some physical strength to use, like swinging a dull blade at someone.

Tell granny that she has to go up against a 6'8, 300lbs of muscle, intruder in hand to hand combat.

Or she could have a gun that requires minimal strength to use and puts them both on an even setting.

If all the good guys were strong, able martial artists and all the bad guys were weaklings and cripples we wouldn't need guns for self defense.

Often that isn't the case though.

And you walk around in public with a gun because you are afraid someone might jump out from behind a tree.

places like Thunder Ranch, Gunsite, or the FBI Academy at Quantico to learn defensive handgun?

You can deal with any attack if you go to "Hoyt's School of Self Defense" and master the 'full Buzzi!'

Are you saying it's preferable to go up against assailants in physical contests of strength?

Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 08:53 AM by GKirk
...it's about defending yourself from someone who would illegally enter your home and have
nerve enough to shoot your pet. You have to realize if they are willing to do that they may (likely) be willing to shoot you too.

apparently that's really easy to do, as we're assured that is all that will happen if a homeowner attempts to use a gun in self-defense.
