(Omaha mayor) Suttle: Stay calm, put down guns
http://www.omaha.com/article/20110409/NEWS97/704099865

We’re coming after you.

That was Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle’s message to criminals and gang members Friday afternoon, as the city neared the end of a particularly violent week.

By the end of Friday, Omaha had counted 14 shooting incidents since Sunday that left four people dead.

<snip>

“Anytime a person picks up a gun ... we’re going to be after them with full force,” the mayor said in an interview at his office.

3. I suppose it's somewhat subjective

But Douglas county requires a permit just to purchase a handgun from any source. The hand gun may not be delivered to you until you register it w/ the Sheriff's Dept. and the permit only allows you to own (not carry) a handgun. http://www.omahasheriff.org/services/gun-permits

Yet the bangers seem to have no problem getting them

Comparatively in Colorado Springs (similar sized city w/ a much lower crime rate) I pick out my gun go through insta-check (if I'm buying retail or at a gun show) and walk out the door a half hour later able to Open Carry if I choose.

9. In fairness
the demographics of Omaha are quite different than Colo. Springs. There is no tourism dollars nor is the city geared toward tourism like colorado springs. The Springs has a fairly large Denver populated, upscale retirement population. The metro area of Omaha is around 1/3 more populous. Omaha has historically been a fairly safe city for it's size. But, we agree that regressive gun laws do nothing to help crime and only effect people not predisposed to criminal behavior.

4. How many were Nebraska CCW permit holders?
Or is this just another post trying to conflate law abiding gun owners with criminal gangs?

I'm pretty sure if any were permit holders you'd have that in all caps in the title of your post.

So let's all assume that the article is the best you could find that uses the word "guns" in the title, and is irrelevant to discussions here ... beyond showing the need for the law abiding to protect themselves since Omaha PD obviously can't.

10. Honest and responsible gun owners have no love for criminals ...
and it's my hope that Omaha is successful in its efforts to crack down on criminals and gang members.

Surely, you are not suggesting that responsible gun owners or the NRA support criminals who misuse firearms?

I personally believe that future gun control should focus on taking the firearms away from criminals and those who have been adjudged as having serious mental issues rather than attempting to harass honest and sane gun owners.
