Bloomberg Is Sued Over City’s Handgun Permit Fee
Bloomberg Is Sued Over City’s Handgun Permit Fee
By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
Published: April 6, 2011

A gun-rights-advocacy group sued Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Tuesday, claiming that the city fee for obtaining a home-handgun permit was so excessive that it impinged on the Second Amendment.

The group, the Second Amendment Foundation, based in Bellevue, Wash., is focusing on New York’s fees because, according to the group, the city is one of the few places in the country that requires people to obtain permits to keep guns in their homes.

The city’s fee is $340, plus a $94.25 charge for a fingerprint check. The fee in most other places in the state is $10, according to the foundation. Mr. Bloomberg has long been a staunch supporter of gun control and has made efforts to reduce the traffic in guns into the city through sting operations, lawsuits against gun dealers and other antigun measures.

It will be interesting to see how this works out

2. I'm pretty sure there's an annual $100 fee on top of the one time fees listed.
It's like choking people for their civil rights.

5. According to this article Bloomberg had asked the city council to reduce the fee
http://readme.readmedia.com/NYSRPA-files-lawsuit-agains...
Mayor Michael Bloomberg himself publicly acknowledged the indefensible nature of the fee structure last October when he urged the City Council to lower the costs specifically to avoid a lawsuit:

"We want to be in compliance with the law ... so that we don't want to lose the ability to have reasonable controls. If we have controls that the courts have ruled too onerous or too unfair, we could lose the whole thing."

The City Council ignored the Mayor and flatly refused to take up this issue. NYSRPA has no choice but to take the issue to court.

I think he sees the writing on the wall regarding the outcome of this lawsuit.

6. In Florida as in many other states there is no license required to have a firearm in your home ...
and no firearm registration.

Plus you can obtain a concealed weapons permit for far less expense and hassle than a license to just have a handgun in your home in NYC.

Why should the citizens of NYC accept second class status?

7. Charging me $435 to keep my gun in my home is outrageous.
I simply could not afford that.

I know that the gangs in Chicago had all of the guns they wanted. This has nothing to do with public safety.
