The government of Mexico has formally asked the United States for details of the ATF operation “Fast
The government of Mexico asked the United States for details of the ATF under Project Gunrunner, Operation name “Fast and Furious“ implemented by the U.S. Department of Justice that allegedly allowed thousands of weapons into the Mexico.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that Mexican authorities have proceeded with a request of detailed information on this matter to the American authorities, after the media of both countries made known such operation had been conducted by the (ATF).

--snip--

The ATF operation sought to locate the smuggling chain, but failed. An ATF agent gave testimony, and reported that he was ordered to “sit still and observe” the actions of smugglers.

7. I imagine the idea was to let some smuggling through to see where the guns went
Much like police will leave a low-level drug dealer to operate unhindered so that they can identify and move on his supplier without spooking the entire network into changing their modus operandi or going into hiding, I imagine the object of Operation "Fast and Furious" was to follow the chain along to the next couple of links, to find out whether someone, and if so who, was coordinating straw purchases in a particular area.

The problem is that if you try to do something like that, you do actually have to identify and collar the next link or two in the chain, as opposed to losing track of it and then keeping quiet about it.

4. Business as usual.
DEA are drug smugglers. ATF are gun runners. FBI are fucking scumbags.

All these agencies are full of corrupt, fascist assholes.

9. Yeah
we certainly have to get to the bottom of this..but...Mexico has a long history of trying to make the effects of their own corruption and overall social policy the fault of the US. The US has a history of accepting responsibility for shit we are not responsible for and never, never being critical of Mexico's policies and corruption...it is kind of a 'The King Has No Clothes' phenomenon, IMHO.
