The Arizona shooting and the post-Assault Weapon ban

Congresswoman Gillford shooting this past weekend was a Glock 9mm with a 33-round magazine, the kind of magazine that would have been banned if the Assault Weapons Ban would have not expire in 2004 thanks to George W. Bush.

In my opinion Bush let the ban expire to that he thinks that Americans with assault weapons can "kick Al-Qaeda ass" and this fear of terrorists. Bush in a way has blood in his hands if you ask me. :mad:

2. Actually, those magazines were never banned. Just new manufacture of them

The millions already in existing stock were completely legal to own or sell.

The only thing that the AWB banned was Democrats from getting reelected in 1994.

3. Congress let the ban expire

You know, the part of the government that passes laws? The ban expired because there was not enough support in Congress to pass it again.

Bush merely stated he would veto the bill if it got to his desk.

The 33 round magazine was available prior the AWB ban, they would have just cost more money.

A magazine change on a semi-automatic pistol can be done in under two seconds, so using 10 round magazines, it might have added about 4 seconds or so to the time line of what happened.

The AWB ban cost the Democrats control of Congress and may have led to Gore losing Tennessee in the 2000 Presidential election. If Gore had carried his home state, what happened in Florida would not have made a damn bit of difference.

So my opinion is that you really don't know what you are talking about and that you're merely trying to stir up trouble.

I used to be an NRA member when I was a kid, but I saw the light and cheered for anti-gun laws.

There was only a ban on new manufacture and sales on a Federal level.

7. It was Congress, not Bush, that allowed the failed AW ban to expire in 2004

Bush even said he'd sign a bill if one was put on his desk.

Advocates of the ban had TEN FULL YEARS to make a case for renewing it or making it permanent. They came up empty-handed.

9. A few thoughts..

1) Bush wasn't responsible for passing or not passing the renewal of the AWB- it never got out of committee
2) 33 round magazines weren't banned, just sales of new ones to the public. There were plenty of them out there perfectly legal to sell or possess.
