GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 26, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Terror not suspected in incident at plant
"FREEPORT -- The shooting of an unarmed security guard at a chemical plant here drew the attention of national security officials because the gunman, who was described as having a heavy accent, told the guard he was taking photographs of the area.
But after repeated interviews with the shooting victim, federal authorities Saturday said they have little reason to believe the incident was the work of terrorists.
Robbie House, a security guard contracted by BASF Corp., told authorities his attacker was possibly of Middle Eastern or Pakistani descent. He also told police the gunman claimed to be photographing "lights." The shooting occurred in an isolated area near BASF's ammonia terminal on FM 1495 late Friday.
House, who was shot in the shoulder, is expected to make a full recovery. The gunman and his truck have not been found."

5. Gee, dems...
Why is it the only people who spout crap like "this guy is right wing scum for exercising his right to self defense" is the RKBA crowd?

Could it be they don't like knowing that they did all they could to make sure the stick-up guy was able to get his hands on a gun in the first place?

When the pain from her son's violent death last July becomes too much to bear, Danell Milton turns to God.
"All I can do when times get hard and my heart gets heavy is pray," explained the mother of Clarence Havvard, 24, who was killed July 28 in a shooting in the 400 block of South Emerson Avenue.
Milton and several family members were among those who gathered at Southport Christian Church to pay tribute and pray for Marion County residents whose lives were lost to violence during the second half of 2003.
Sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis, the Service of Remembrance and Peacemaking included brief tributes to Havvard and 66 other homicide victims who died from June 15 to Dec. 31, 2003."

DeKalb County police are investigating the death of a man believed shot Sunday night while riding a scooter on a street near Lithonia.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. at the Highland Place Apartments on Athena Lane, according to DeKalb police Sgt. Pat White.

The victim was identified as Johnnie Lee Butler, 40, of Lithonia.

"Initially it appears that the victim was riding a scooter on the roadway and was shot," White said. "The scooter was found approximately 30 feet from the victim."

Man dies after Eastside shooting

A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by his roommate late Sunday following a quarrel.

Billy Spearman, of 1000 block of North Rural Street, was shot as he sat in the passenger seat of a car that was pulling away from his home.

Spearman and his roommate, 39-year-old Joseph Hubbard, had argued in their home Sunday afternoon and then again at about 10 p.m. before Spearman decided to leave, said Indianapolis Police Lt. Paul Ciesielski.

As the car was pulling away from the home, Hubbard chased it down and fired a handgun at Spearman, striking him. The driver went to a nearby convenience store to phone 911 When police arrived moments later they found Hubbard walking along the street at 16th and Sherman Streets. He was apprehended without resistance.
