What to do with 58,000 rounds of ammo? Pewaukee must decide
City of Pewaukee - In the wake of the breakup of the Police Department, city officials are trying to resolve a couple of nagging questions: What are they going to do with the 58,000 rounds of ammunition that are left over and why did the department stockpile so much?

The 58,000 rounds of handgun, rifle and shotgun ammunition are about five times more than a department the size of the city force would require in a year for duty and training purposes, some city officials said.

--snip--

Some of the stockpile can be attributed to the fact two shooting sessions were canceled because of budget cuts, Kraemer said.

Additionally, Kraemer said, the department had been transitioning from having several different calibers of ammunition for handguns to having officers use the same caliber. The decision to use only .40 caliber also contributed to the stockpile, he said.

Send some of that .40 my way if you'd like

6. Sell it and use the money to pay for other services?
Why is this a complicated question?

Just sell the ammo for a fair price to the qualified public and use the money for the fire department, library or whatever.

Around us there is still a shortage of 9 mm and a few other calibers. Heck, Cheaper Than Dirt is pretty much sold out of 9 mm and .30 carbine.

8. Or just keep the calibers they use.
It's not like ammo goes bad. They'll use it eventually.

I think it is because bureaucrats really are kinda like vogons.

From The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy via Wikipedia:

Vogons are one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy. Not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous. They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. The best way to get a drink out of a Vogon is to stick your finger down his throat, and the best way to irritate him is to feed his grandmother to the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. On no account should you allow a Vogon to read poetry at you.

Edit: Used real HTML tags, oops.

9. The answer is in the article.
"Sheriff Dan Trawicki said the city should not have any trouble selling the ammunition."

There you go.

10. I found the problem.
"about five times more than a department the size of the city force would require in a year for duty and training purposes"

They are obviously not training enough.

No, I'm not joking. I go through 3-5K rounds per year of .22, .45, 7.62 in 3 different forms, 12ga. And I don't feel like I practice/train nearly enough.

Police should be shooting 200 rd./week minimum from their duty weapon, 100 from their rifle or shotgun.

Training ammo budget should be one of the biggest items in the books.

11. Wait, two sessions cancelled, but they still bought the ammo.
And it was because of BUDGET reasons?
