Freeway shootings in Texas and California
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 07:38 PM by depakid
Seems like a new twist on "step outside."

Fatal freeway shooting follows restaurant fight (3 shot)

A freeway shooting after a fight at an Antioch restaurant early Saturday left one man dead and two women wounded, police said. Antioch investigators said the incident started as a fight at Qin's Asian Bistro and Bar at 5007 Lone Tree Way shortly after the restaurant closed at 1 a.m.

Some of the people involved in the fight left the restaurant and were driving west on Highway 4 in two cars when a third vehicle pulled up alongside east of the Somersville Road exit and someone inside opened fire. People in the other cars also may have fired shots, officers said.

The two cars targeted in the shooting continued to Johnny B Sports Bar at 2500 Sycamore Drive, about 2 miles from Qin's, and pulled in at 1:23 a.m. just as Antioch police were conducting what they described as a routine check.

4 wounded in Stemmons Freeway shooting after quarrel at Dallas night club

A freeway shooting following a disturbance in a night club left four victims with gunshot wounds early Sunday morning.

According to Dallas police reports, two groups left a local club after quarreling. About 4:30 a.m., occupants in one group's vehicle opened fire on the other as they drove on Stemmons Freeway, wounding four. The victims went to a Quick Stop at Royal Lane and Emerald Street, where police responded to a shooting call.

The victims were taken to Parkland Hospital, and no fatalities were reported among them. Police did not release details on their conditions and said that detectives are "working to develop suspect information."

.. the two "groups" are members of two competing "social clubs" according to initial reports. According to CBS11, more than one minor was involved.

not glorification of gang culture/irreversible intertwining of gang culture with pop culture and less fathers involved in their childrens' lives? Trio in Taren Point armed robbery, car chase, carjacking
TWO men are on the run after an armed robbery, and a third is under police guard in hospital following a car chase in which a woman was injured.

Officers say two armed robbers held up a bowling alley in Taren Point, in southwest Sydney, about 10pm (AEDT) last night.

They fled the scene in a Volkswagen Golf driven by a third man and were spotted by police, who began a pursuit north, ending at Brodie Spark Drive, Wolli Creek.

The chase ended when the offenders' car crashed into another vehicle.

"A woman in that car suffered a broken arm and has been taken to hospital," a police spokesman said.

Two of the offenders fled on foot, but the third hijacked another car and, holding the driver at gunpoint, sped off again.

Cops nab three in middle of armed hold-up
THREE men have been charged after an armed hold-up of a hotel in Sydney's south-west.

About 9.15pm (AEDT) yesterday, three men - one armed with a machete and the other two with screwdrivers - entered a hotel on Cartwright Ave in Green Valley and threatened staff and swung the machete at customers.

One of the men tried to steal cash before assaulting a security guard and attempting to flee.

But police arrived at the hotel while the robbery was still in progress.

Just remember there is no crime, especially gun crime in OZ.

29. Found some more anti-Indian violence on Saturday

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8449731.stm

An Indian man is in a serious condition in a Melbourne hospital after being attacked and set alight by a gang.

It comes a week after an Indian graduate student was stabbed to death in the city, prompting a travel advisory from the Indian government.

Melbourne police said the latest attack appeared to be random and there was no evidence it was racially motivated.

But the attacks have prompted an angry reaction in India, where Australia has been accused of ignoring racism...

Never mind then, the plods assure us the attack "appeared to be random". Not that lessens the agony of the poor
bastard in the burn unit- or speaks any better of the 'fine society'.

Not that it matters to some folks.

They need to find such outrage (it's like an addiction).

And- much like your own NRA etc., they don't care who they hurt in the process.

32. Again with the "entire continent" bollocks.
Australia may geographically be "an entire continent," but the population (~21.3 million) is smaller than that of the combined Benelux countries (~27.6 million), in spite of Australia having over 100 times the surface area.

I mean, the amount of violent crime rate has be awful compared to Antarctica's, and that's "an entire continent" almost twice the size of Australia! Of course, the permanent population is zero, and the non-permanent population is about 1,000, which is kind of my point: it's disingenuous to compare a country of less than 22 million to one of over 300 million, particularly considering the two states in which these incidents occurred both have larger populations than the "entire continent" of Australia.

34. Again with the nuttery
There's been more violent crime in suburban Portland, Oregon over the last several moths than all of Australia.

Much of it driven in local communities in the US by gun proliferation.

The more you stretch, the more absurd your cowardly obsession looks.

Tick tock 'til the next family murder, mass shooting, cop killing or workplace massacre, etc., etc.

(last time I wrote that- lo and behold one happened in the states as I was typing! yet- oops, didn't happen in Europe).

It'll be interesting to see if freeway shootings are your new 2010 trend.

39. Nice attempted red herring.
Getting abusive doesn't alter the fact that you have on more than one occasion referred to Australia as "an entire continent" in order to contrast it with mere sub-sections of the United States, in spite of the fact that it's an obviously invalid comparison (given that, say, the population of the Greater Los Angeles and San Diego Areas, at ~21 million, approaches that of Australia).

There's been more violent crime in suburban Portland, Oregon over the last several moths than all of Australia.

I strongly doubt that's true. You may have noticed more violent crimes reported in the Oregonian than in The Age or the Sydney Morning Herald, but I suspect editorial decisions play a part in that, and possibly confirmation bias on your part as well.

To illustrate, let's take a look at crime statistics for Australia and Oregon. The most recent figures available are for 2007, from Crime in Australia: Facts and Figures 2008 (http://www.aic.gov.au/documents/E/4/0/%7BE4031E6F-031D-415C-B544-8CE865A3CA0C%7Dfacts_and_figures_2008.pdf) and the Oregon State Police's 2007 Annual Report, Section 2 (http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/CJIS/docs/2007/SECTION_2_STATEWIDE_CRIMES_PERSONS_2007.pdf). There is the usual caveat that classifications of offenses may not be identical, so this is something of an approximation.

Homicide (murder and manslaughter):
Oregon - 104 (89 murder, 15 "negligent homicide")
Australia - 282 (253 murder, 29 manslaughter; source notes that this is "the lowest annual number yet recorded")

Assault:
Oregon - 29,608 (22,910 "simple," 6,698 aggravated)
Australia - 176,427

Sexual assault:
Oregon - 3,527
Australia - 19,781
(Note that this comparison is rather uncertain due to different methods of recording crimes; I have attempted to identify those offenses under Oregonian which meet the Australian definition of "sexual assault," namely "a physical assault of a sexual nature, directed toward a person who" does not consent, consents as a result of coercion, or is legally incapable of giving consent.)

Robbery:
Oregon - 2,911
Australia - 17,988

Kidnapping:
Oregon - 472
Australia - 730

Do you really think it's plausible that by 2009, the numbers in Australia had dropped so precipitously, the number in Oregon risen precipitously, or a combination of both, that there was really less violent crime in all of Australia than in greater Portland? Come off it.

Much of it driven in local communities in the US by gun proliferation.

Well now, there's a funny thing. Because if you look at the violent crime figures for Oregon from ten years previously (http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/CJIS/docs/1997/section_2_97.pdf), you'll see that they were higher across the board (except forcible rape, but only ~2% of rapes involve a firearm in the US), in spite of the fact that the population of Oregon has grown since, as has the number of firearms in private ownership (and of course, post-2004 you could get full-capacity magazines again).

It would seem your hypothesis doesn't hold water. Which is hardly surprising, given that it's founded on the notion that possession of a firearm causes people to commit violent acts that they would otherwise not even consider.

Tick tock 'til the next family murder, mass shooting, cop killing or workplace massacre, etc., etc.

(last time I wrote that- lo and behold one happened in the states as I was typing! yet- oops, didn't happen in Europe).

Really? I'm impressed. Did you read every single national and regional newspaper in Europe to establish that nobody murdered a police officer or several family members that day? Not in Italy, or Poland, or Bulgaria? You might be surprised how many shootings take place in Bulgaria. There was actually a gunfight in Plovdiv on Sunday night, when two "businessmen" got into an argument over a table in a nightclub, and their bodyguards (about ten on each side) started mixing it up. And a controversial TV/radio presenter, Bobi Tsankov, was murdered in broad daylight on a busy street in Sofia last Tuesday; two or three guys with 9mm pistols fired at least 15 rounds at him.

Especially since they enjoy preying on the rest of us so much. The pricks put quite a few bullet holes in my mom's house (probably return fire from the dealers house across the street as they reacted to a drive by). Eventually her house was partially burned down to cover a burglary. Mom took the insurance check and bought a home in another neighborhood. No, I don't give a good Goddamn about gang-bangers.
