Polk man shoots shotgun-wielding robber
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 07:46 PM by Fire_Medic_Dave
POLK COUNTY, FL -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the victim of a would-be armed robbery shot one of his attackers on Sunday.

Johnny Preston told deputies he was in the front yard of his Lakeland home preparing his cargo van for work around 6 p.m. He spotted two men in a red 4-door Mazda driving by slowly, staring at him.

Preston became suspicious and retrieved his .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver from inside the van and wrote down the Mazda's vehicle tag number.

He went back to preparing his van. Moments later, he looked up and was staring down the barrel of a shotgun. The two men, who were wearing t-shirts over their faces, demanded his wallet.

Preston said he pushed the barrel of the shotgun away with one hand and fired his handgun with the other, hitting the armed suspect in the torso.

2. They probably didn't expect any resistance.
These types of guys see themselves transforming into a street corner Zeus when they pick up a gun, expecting terrified submission from the mere mortals they have at the mercy of their 12-gauge thunderbolts. Then one of the victims decides to shoot back and their whole process gets fucked up. Aspirations to godhood aside, most of them have the same instinctual resistance to killing that anyone else does, which can paralyze their trigger fingers in those critical few seconds.

3. Lesson to all: long guns suck for criminal use.
For the short ranges that gun crimes are commited at, they have no real advantage to the user, and in fact are much easier for the victim to deflect.

Then again, generally petty robbers and carjackers aren't the highest folks on the IQ ladder.
