GUNS IN THE NEWS--November 12, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current for the Monday thread, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. (This allows for the fact than many people are off-line over the weekend, allowing the Monday thread to be a weekend summary.) On all other days of the week, stories should have been originally within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to stories or articles from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) may be regarded as suspect by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link from a more mainstream source.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accorance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er will be reported to the moderators.

2. Man accused of having bodies in car has history of drug arrests (MD)
Ah, those law-abiding, responsible gun owners....

"The man arrested on Interstate 95 in Cecil County last week after two bodies were found in the trunk of the car he was driving has a record of drug charges in New York state, authorities there said yesterday.
James Moore, 39, of Andrews, S.C., served nearly five years in a New York state prison in the mid-1990s for attempting to sell crack cocaine to an undercover police officer, said New York correctional officials. In addition, Westchester County, N.Y., police said yesterday that a warrant was filed Monday in Cecil County for Moore's arrest because he failed to appear at a sentencing hearing in 2001 on an unrelated drug charge.
The bodies, which had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, have not been identified, Maryland State Police said. Several investigators on the case were out of the office yesterday for the Veterans Day holiday."

Ah, those law-abiding, responsible gun owners....

"James Moore, 39, of Andrews, S.C., served nearly five years in a New York state prison in the mid-1990s"

Now, you know damn well this individual is prohibted by a "gun law" to own any firearms. Are you saying the gun laws don't work? Why do you have to post an obvious lie? This man was not a law abiding gun owner.

19. Gee cross....
I'm not the one pretending that gun owners are law-abiding and responsible. Nor am I the one who screams in rage every time the gun show loophole by which this bozo could have gotten guns without a background check is mentioned.

"This man was not a law abiding gun owner. "
No shit, sherlock. He was a law breaking gun owner, of the sort the NRA seems to pander to.

To call a convicted felon a law abiding gun owner is a lie, isn't it?

3. Slain during a carjacking, 'wonderful' father recalled (MD)
"Charles Edward Warner Sr. had a generous disposition and enjoyed helping others, but he wasn't the type to allow someone to take something from him, friends and family say.
Police believe Warner resisted when an assailant tried to steal his beloved customized van Saturday from a Wendy's parking lot in Northwest Baltimore.
Warner, 59, was fatally shot during the carjacking, and the 1995 Chevrolet van was stolen, investigators said.
Warner, of the 4000 block of Elderon Ave. in Northwest Baltimore, was a retired father of two and grandfather of seven. His death has left family and friends wondering how he could be gunned down on a sunny Saturday afternoon."

Three police officers wounded at Dallas apartment; other casualties feared

BOBBY ROSS, Associated Press Writer Wednesday, November 12, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-12) 05:58 PST DALLAS (AP) -- Three officers were shot and wounded early Wednesday during a standoff at an apartment, and officials said they feared two people were dead in a bedroom.

Three children remained inside the apartment with a shotgun-wielding man, a police spokesman said. Police said they were able to rescue four other children when they arrived.

The episode began about 3:40 a.m. when police went to the Meadowpark Apartments in southwest Dallas because of reports of gunfire. The officers entered and found seven children unhurt, but were told that the gunman was inside a bedroom, said Sgt. Gil Cerda, a police spokesman. The three officers were shot when officers entered the bedroom, he said.

"There's possibly two deceased persons in the bedroom inside with the shooter," Cerda said.

DIDDY'S GUN PAL IS SLAIN

November 12, 2003 --
Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' former bodyguard - who was acquitted with the millionaire rap mogul in a sensational gun trial two years ago - was shot and killed early yesterday outside an Atlanta nightclub, authorities said.

Anthony "Wolf" Jones, 38, was slain along with another man, Lamont Girdy, also 38, apparently after an argument over a woman at 4 a.m. in Buckhead, the heart of the city's entertainment district, said his lawyer, Michael Bachner.

Demetrius Flenory, 35, who was treated at the hospital for gunshot wounds to the buttocks, was arrested and charged with two counts of homicide, Atlanta cops said.

Another man was also hospitalized with a foot wound.

8. Jury acquits man in fatal shooting

Follow up

Kelly O'Hara contended all along that he was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed his girlfriend's ex-husband during a struggle last January.

Yesterday, a Jefferson Circuit Court jury acquitted him of a murder charge in the death of Michael Henry — and refused to find him guilty of any lesser crimes, including manslaughter or reckless homicide.

9. Senate Votes to Arm Cargo Pilots
WASHINGTON - The latest government terror warning is giving a push to the stalled effort to allow cargo pilots to carry weapons in the cockpit.

The Homeland Security Department warned police last week that al-Qaida may be plotting to fly cargo planes from another country into U.S. nuclear plants, bridges, dams or other targets.

That warning prompted the Senate to pass a bill late Monday that would allow cargo pilots to carry guns, according to Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., the bill's sponsor.

"It closes a big loophole in our homeland security," he said.

10. No charges in 'make my day' case
Charges will not be filed against a man who allegedly shot his neighbor's dog and then shot and killed the neighbor when the man confronted him, the Weld County district attorney said Monday.

The decision not to file charges was a hard one, said Weld County District Attorney Al Dominguez, but the shooting is justified under Colorado's "make my day" law.

"Based on the evidence that the investigation turned up, I could not find a way to get around that statute," Dominguez said. "This is the law we have in this state. This tragic consequence is the type of event that it can engender."

12. Proposed law may hide more than just guns (Ohio)
The gun lobby strikes again. - Wayne

Proposed law may hide more than just guns

Columbus -
After Florida passed legislation to allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons, a study showed some law breakers received permission to carry them, too.

Loopholes and human errors caused Florida to grant permits to a man who robbed a business at gunpoint, a woman who had been confined to a mental hospital and a person arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm, a study showed.

Under a concealed weapons bill being debated in Ohio, it would be impossible for the public to learn if similar flaws existed here. House Bill 12 calls for all gun permit information to be exempt from public disclosure.
