Fear is NOT the reason I own guns for self-defense
I know this is the argument perpetuated by the fat bastard Michael Moore, but he's wrong.
And so are his disciples.

I'd like to think a reasonable man who was not a firearms enthusiast would give the benefit of the doubt to those who are.
But most of the antis aren't what you'd call reasonable.

If you knew me, or if you knew people like me... you'd know fear is not the issue.
Before I had a family under my charge, I lived my life like I was dying tomorrow. And it's only a miracle I didn't.
Fear of death was the last thing on my mind.

But that all changed when I became responsible for others. It was then that I realized I had more than my personal interests to protect.

I carry a gun so I can protect my wife. So I can protect my family.
I carry a gun so I can protect myself... which in turn protects the family I provide for.
I carry a gun so all of us can live long, happy lives. All of US. Not the criminals that may some day try to take our lives, our property, or our dignity without cause.

I am not afraid of much. And the people like me... most gun enthusiasts... are the same damn way.
I know some of you Antis think you're cute as you hide in your make-believe world and pretend to be brave.
But you're certainly no braver than I.

Finally - think about this. All these shootings you use as weapons against gun ownership...
Where were the heroes that weren't scared then?
I don't remember seeing anyone standing up and holding their ground.
No... they were scared. And rightly so.
If - during these tragedies - just one BRAVE American had been armed - legally armed - think of the lives that could have been saved.

This is an honest appeal to simply revisit your thinking. Because trust me... the people you label as 'fearful'... they're anything but that.

can you guarantee that all non-hunting gun owners are as level headed? Not prone to violet, irrational outbursts?

Nope. I love my family just as much as you - and have absolutely no interest in a gun. I have no need at all for that sort of power.

You can't argue with logic like that. I mean really you can't. When someone is that far gone into the realm of absurdity, trying to have a rational discussion is just fruitless. And since the poster is most likely a freeper anyway, it's best just to have a chuckle at his growing irrelevancy.

Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 09:20 PM by jmg257
my family or I being victims, or being killed, I wouldn't bother carrying the times I do. I carry at times 'cause I also fear needing the gun and not having it - what a dumb ass deadly mistake that would be! The guns I own because I like them (most of 'em) I own for enjoyment - whether shooting or collecting.

The guns I carried as a cop I did out of fear of being in a deadly confrontation (fear of losing one actually), and common sense of course. I tell ya, I couldn't swap from a revolver to a 9mm fast enough, and then to the .40 when they were available. Loved having a backup gun, and that 870 shotgun in the car too. Usually spent alot of time at the range. I always thought getting killed by some scumbag would be bad for my health, and for my family.

I also wear seatbelts, and make sure my kid does too. I don't drive TOO fast, usually wear safety glasses when using a chain saw, or power tools at work, keep an eye on the youngsters when they are in the pool, and I even installed fire alarms in the house.

Nothing wrong with a bit of fear - keeps us from doing all kinds of stupid stuff.

71. Ironically, you have assaulted Michael Moore on at least the last 2 nights here
and it is his very medium of film which manifests the roots of fear, according to some analysts.

I personally do not believe your wife and family are in danger from progressive film-makers generally and from Michael Moore specifically.

There are a few wild animals out there but by and large we've driven them into the remnant wilderness areas where they are gradually becoming extinct owing to humans devouring their habitat. You hunter folks are from a long-ago era now, and ought to be fighting State and local governments to preserve habitat instead of posting on DU that "Antis" constitute a "pussy-fest," to use your term.

And by the way, trust me, you aren't going to make a lot of friends in the Women's forum here.

Alfred Hitchcock could offer some tips between the connection between human fear and cinema. Notably, he could manipulate our neurologies without weaponry.
