Woman shoots self while trying to kill mice (CA)
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 01:48 PM by davepc
POTTER VALLEY – A Mendocino County woman who was trying to kill mice in her trailer with a gun ended up shooting herself and another person.

Sheriff's officials say the 43-year-old woman pulled out her .44-caliber Magnum revolver after she saw the mice scurrying across the floor of her trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley.

But she accidentally dropped the gun, which went off as it struck the floor. The bullet went through the woman's kneecap, bounced off the keys sitting on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer and grazed the man's groin before ending up in his coin pocket.

Authorities did not release the shooting victims' names.

The mice escaped the shooting unharmed.

1. This might be her first attempt at a Darwin, so let's cut her some slack.
I'm sure we'll hear from her again.

nothing like an instant spring shave with free circumcision all thrown in there together.

Now y'all know why we wear them big ass belt buckles down round these here parts. . . .

(cut scene to dramatic reeactment):

sound of gunshot and fakey hollywood ricochet (Zing! Zoing!)

Eldon (leans forward and gasps):
"Erna what the fuck! You just shot my dick off!"

Erna:
"I was shootin' at a little mouse. I guess I got it."

3. I know of an old cowboy who shot holes in his cieling
trying to get scorpions. .44 is a little big for mice ain't it? I'd use a .22 with snake shot.

I hate when that happens. damn varmints.

5. A BB gun, sure; a firearm shooting bullets, no way. And it must have been an old revolver...
made before the days of transfer-bar safeties, if her account is accurate.

7. but hey

She'd never been convicted of a felony, delared mentally incompetent or involuntarily committed to a psychiatric institution -- so why the hell shouldn't she have that thing?

Trailers don't have really thick walls usually, and are often close to other trailers. Who wouldn't want neighbours like these?

My dad had mice in his summer trailer. He put Bounce sheets in the drawers and cupboards, and sometimes even set traps.

12. Might have been a Ruger "Old Model" Super Blackhawk...
Ruger had a safety recall on these revolvers which were manufactured between 1953 through 1972: Ruger will modify the revolver and you only pay initial shipping.

The patented Ruger Conversion Kit is an entirely new operating system for these revolvers. It can help prevent accidental
discharges caused by a drop or blow to the hammer if the user has failed to take the basic safety precaution of keeping the hammer
down on an empty chamber. That’s very important!

Sticky glue traps work well for mice and are much less nauseating than hitting a mouse with a .44 cal. And they do a lot less damage to your trailer or your hearing. But they clause a lot of suffering to the mouse unless you dispose of the mouse quickly and humanely.

14. Paging Dr. Darwin.
Really now, who uses a .44 for shooting a mouse? There's more to the story than this.

16. OK, I gotta call BS.

Look, I own a S&W model 629 .44 magnum.

I enjoy shooting it because it is a handful to shoot. It requires intense discipline to hold on target as the recoil is immense. Further, the blast is incredibly loud. Firing one on an outdoor range without hearing protection would leave your ears ringing. Firing one in an enclosed room would be literally deafening. I always laughed at the old "Dirty Harry" movies because if that was a real .44 magnum old Clint would not even have to shoot the bad guy, just fire it in the air and everyone within 20 feet would be holding their ears and screaming. :) This is an extremely powerful handgun and ammunition.

No one with any experience with this firearm would ever ever consider firing it at a mouse, or in a building without hearing protection.

Either this person is a complete and absolute idiot, or there is more to the story.

In any case her knee is likely destroyed.

17. I know

She didn't drop it, she *threw it* at the mouse.

Makes sense to me. Didn't want to waste what was in the bottle sitting beside the gun by throwing *that* at the mouse.

Eek! A mouse! Take that, mouse!

21. She probably was that dumb
See the LAPD officer who is suing Glock and Uncle Mike's because he didn't secure his three year old son in his vehicle and the little guy got ahold of his Glock 21, which he also didn't secure, and shot him. Cheap holster, incredibly poor parenting, now he is paralyzed and he is claiming that the Glock is at fault for not having a "safety" device. Never mind they have three safety devices specifically to prevent an unintended discharge, he feels that they should have had some way to prevent the gun from being discharged by his son. Can't design the end user I guess.

Anyway she may very well have had it loaded with some .44 specials. No matter what she is dumb as hell.
