8. Finally
Finally, there is one thing that you and I can agree on. Yes, there are some pretty stupid people out there with guns. How you and I deal with that issue is likely something that will never agree on, however.

Are you really the first poster to your own original post? There has to be a name for that.

22. Her boyfriend is an asshole
You don't do that to unprepared people! It hurts. I know from first-hand experience when I took a rifle scope to the eyebrow, which left a decent-looking bruise for most of a week.

I have no doubt that with proper instruction and some practice, even a slip of a person like that lady can competently handle a big, powerful cartridge like the .50 AE, but, damn, you don't start off with that one.

Shit like that can actually cause a second shot to be involuntarily fired, did you know that? The shooter squeezes the trigger and the monster gun goes off. The recoil slams the gun back so hard that the gun actually moves rearward faster than the trigger finger can squeeze, letting the trigger move ahead enough to reset the firing mechanism. Then, as the gun slows down, the trigger finger (which is still squeezing from the initial shot) catches back up to the gun and trips the mechansim again, resulting in a second, unaimed shot at whatever.

4. the notes to the video

direct here:

http://www.madogre.com/News.html

Note -- I only offer that link because it has a description of the event, although frankly it's pretty funny:

Clinging to our Guns and our Religion, every day.

101 uses for the Quran.

... I'm going to be packing that Tussy everywhere. Everywhere that is, except Toronto. I'm not only not going to go to Toronto but I swear to GOD that I will never set foot in Toronto ever again. Yeah, I've been there. Wasn't impressed. It was like Bizzaro-Seattle, but for flaccid wanker dorks. I thought Chicago had a dickhead for a Mayor. I thought New York had a dickhead for a Mayor. Toronto wins. ...

Of course. Toronto is the centre of the universe.

Back to business ... oh, crap the "BOOM HEADSHOT!" entry seems to have been archived and I'm not going looking for it.

I'll just admire the standard links offered on a blog operated by a gunhead:

Anyhow, somewhere at that site there's "a first hand description of the ricochet displayed in this video".

There sure did seem to be enough in the ricohet to bring down the noodlebrain doing the shooting.

Was there something about airliners in that video? I'll have to go watch again.

10. No, there was nothing in the video about Airliners
When I was watching that powerful, unnecessary, huge, big bore, massive 50 caliber sniper rifle fire, It brought back memories of of the website about "50 Caliber Terror"

9. If a sniper with a 50 caliber rifle hit the pilot,
The pilot would be killed instantly, slumping over the controls forcing the plane into a steep dive. A dive that ends in the containment building of a nuclear reactor.

The cockpit crew is promptly sucked out through the bullet hole preventing them from regaining control of the aircraft.

That is the only possible outcome when people play stupid gun tricks.

16. Hollywood bullshit...
Having said that, writer David Kopel (along with author and pilot, Captain David Petteys) notes that the risks related to the hull being punctured are greatly exaggerated. In a recent National Review Online article dated September 16, they state, "There is only one known instance in which a bullet hole in an aircraft frame yanked objects across the plane, expanded, and sucked a person out into the sky. That was the James Bond movie Goldfinger. The movie was not intended to teach real-life lessons about physics." (Go to http://www.nationalreview.com/kopel/kopel091401.shtml to read the entire article.)

18. Don't forget the magnetic attraction to the nuclear reactor
After all, if a sniper is going to shoot down an airliner with a 50 caliber rifle, it has to crash directly into the containment building of a nuclear reactor. There is no other outcome for stupid gun tricks like that.

23. Yeah, like in Alien 3 or Alien 4
When the pasty-white alien gets sucked out through a hole in the space ship.

Hmmm... .511-caliber bullet...

A = *π*d = * 3.14159 *0.511 in = 0.2051 in

Maximum pressure differential of an airliner cabin to the outside air: 8 lb/in

F = A*p = 0.2051 in * 8 lb/in = 1.64 lbs of pressure

Dear god, I don't think anybody could survive.

20. there isn't
A 750 grain (about 1 3/4 oz, roughly) solid bullet a half inch in diameter is not capable of doing anything to an airliner other than punching a half inch hole through each side of it. Not very impressive. the statements about them being used to shoot down planes probably originated from someone with an agenda who researched their original use, which was for Special Forces Soldiers to pack one deep into enemy territory, place precise shots into very delicate and critical (and expensive, hard to replace) parts of enemy jets and ground equipment. Never have they ever been used to fire at a plane in flight, and they were never intended to make the planes explosively deconstruct, just destroy their sensitive parts that they can't fly without, grounding them. This was a cold war strategy, for use by one major power against another major power.

It can do a number on an engine block, though.

50caliberterror.com is a standing joke among gun cogniscenti; I'm still not entirely convinced that it's not a farce put up to take the JF's money and make them look like idiots.

Both those women did better than this guy, though...

That's a .600 Nitro Express (HUGE hunting caliber, suitable for elephants) in a single-shot hunting pistol. Energy and recoil momentum dwarf the .500 S&W, never mind the .50 Action Express.

Moral of the story---don't shoot heavy hunting handguns if you don't have the grip strength to keep them from smacking you in the forehead during recoil.

The high-angle ricochet from the .50 target rifle was quite remarkable, though. Moral of that story is, don't shoot steel targets with big calibers at less than 100 to 200 yards unless you are using fragile or frangible bullets.

Here's a bunch of people at an indoor shooting range somewhere in Asia Minor or the Middle East, shooting a .577 Tyrannosaur (BIG game rifle) at an indoor shooting range. Recoil is at least nine times that of a .729 caliber shotgun, which is astronomical). And then very last person to shoot shows how it's done...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VVOH7Ep_8w

On the other side of the coin, here's how guns are supposed to be run...

USPSA pistol competition (the circle I compete in, same as IPSC in Canada), Limited division: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEBdXZKiLz0

The motto of the sport is Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas (Accuracy, Power, Speed). Reloading is a big part of the necessary skill set, as you can see. Numerical score on the targets is divided by time, so you have to shoot both accurately and quickly.

More IPSC, some raceguns:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8a_n3phvb4

How to run an AK (what I shoot in USPSA rifle, except I run a Kobra optic on the siderail mount):

15. Very good videos...
I find myself wondering if you were able to develop a time machine if the .577 Tyrannosaur would actually enable you to bag a T rex. It might just really piss him off. If you didn't drop him on the first shot, you might have a hard time with follow up shots.

17. A T. rex would have massed similar to a large elephant (5-7 tons, IIRC)...
so a .577 would almost certainly put one down if you were able to shoot it in a vital spot, and they were fairly lightly built for their size (they were built like large ground birds, not like elephants). Keeping your head while watching those 6-foot jaws charging you would probably be the tough part...

Just like elephant or tiger hunting, I'm sure you wouldn't want to wait until it was charging you to shoot it, and you'd want to have backups with their own rifles, though.

I'd also worry about a pack of these puppies (Deinonychus):

14. Some important lessons can be learned from these videos...
1) Ricochets happen. While shooting at an indoor range I was hit at least 3 times by ricochets, once on my left arm, two times on my legs. The Ricochet to my arm drew a little blood, the ones to my legs just stung slightly. It's very important to wear protective glasses to protect your eyes and not a bad idea to wear pants. Good quality headsets are also a must if you value your hearing.

2) Never ever give an inexperienced shooter a powerful weapon to introduce them to shooting. Start them off with a small caliber such as a .22 or a .38 special in a fairly heavy weapon. Once they are used to recoil you can advance to a .357 mag or a .44 mag. This advice applies to both male and female shooters.

Boyfriends often ignore this advice just to get a laugh when they allow their girlfriend to try out their weapons. This is an excellent way to convince your girlfriend that you are a true asshole.

Even a small woman can fire a .44 mag without problems if she has shooting experience. My daughter, for example, weighs 100 pounds wet but is able to shoot accurately with my big S&W model 629 in .44 mag although she prefers to shoot my S&W model 25-2 in .45 acp. The two revolvers are the same size but the .45 acp weapon has much less recoil. It's now her most favorite weapon and she is very accurate with it.

But even an experienced shooter can find the recoil of a truly powerful handgun intimidating and possibly damaging especially if he/she forgets to hold the weapon in a firm grip.

3) Remember to wear a tight fitting shirt or blouse when shooting a semi-auto weapon. When the weapon ejects the brass th brass can land inside of your shirt and because it's very hot can cause minor burns.

Shooting is a fun sport. It helps to find a experience and responsible shooter to guide you.
