Intense competition from China in overseas oil deals is forcing India to follow the popular American adage, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em".
New Delhi is now readying to accept Beijing's offer of a dialogue on hydrocarbon co-operation by setting up a task force to identify areas of conflict and co-operation between two of Asia's biggest oil guzzlers.
The dialogue offer came on Tuesday from senior Chinese energy official
Xiang Zhao Ching, heading a China National Petroleum Company delegation to oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's roadshow in Houston for hawking 20 prospective oilfields.
The task force will be headed by veteran West Asia hand Talmeez Ahmed, who is on deputation to the oil ministry as Aiyar's pointman, and include other external affairs ministry officials.
