China and Taiwan swim for peace
Taipei - More than 1 200 swimmers from China and Taiwan took to the ocean in a bay that was once a battleground between the arch foes on Sunday for an event intended as a call for peace as cross-strait tensions build.

Launching from a beach on Liaolo Bay on Taiwan's island of Kinmen, the swimmers followed a route 1,5 kilometres out to sea towards Taiwan and back again, organisers said.

Liaolo Bay was pounded by some of the 470 000 artillery shells that China's People's Liberation Army fired at Kinmen over 44 days starting from August 23, 1958.
