Daniel Matibidi, 20, and Nhlanhla Masuku, 15, were shot when a large group of people set fire to two trucks and a steam roller was crashed into a house, said superintendent Andy Pieke.
He said Matibidi and Masuku were shot in the back in Khumalo Valley, Katlehong, about 11:30 on Monday. The two died instantly.
Ekurhuleni metro police rushed to Katlehong when the violence broke out. One of the metro policemen chased a group of people. Shots were fired and Matibidi and Masuku were shot, Pieke said.
The reason for the public violence has not been determined, he said.
