Prosecutors widen net in Seoul scandal probe
Prosecutors said yesterday they would investigate South Korea's political parties and top businesses in an emerging scandal over fund-raising during last year's presidential election.

President Roh Moo-hyun urged prosecutors Sunday to make a "full-scale revelation" of how much political parties spent in the run-up to last December's presidential poll, and called on big businesses and political parties to cooperate in the probe.

"We have plans to investigate," Prosecutor-General Song Kwang-soo said yesterday.

His deputy, Kim Jong-bin, later told reporters the investigation will focus on political parties and their links to businesses. He gave no further details.

Local news media reported that prosecutors were targeting the nation's top five conglomerates: Samsung, Hyundai, SK, LG and Lotte.
