A San Francisco police bomb squad has rendered safe a suspicious device found in an alley behind a San Francisco Superior Court building around 7 a.m. today, police Sgt. Steve Mannina said.

The device, about the size of a small lamp, prompted concern because there were wires protruding from it, but it turned out to not be any sort of explosive, Mannina said.

City streets in the area that were closed while the investigation was under way are being re-opened to pedestrians and vehicular traffic, he said.

The device was found on Redwood Street, behind the civil courthouse at 400 McAllister St., and the courthouse and businesses in the alley were evacuated by San Francisco sheriff's deputies, according to Mannina.
