Cambodian ruling party can't govern alone

The official results of last month's general election confirmed Saturday that Prime Minister Hun Sen's party won, but not with enough legislative seats to govern Cambodia alone.

The National Election Committee said his Cambodian People's Party received 73 seats in the new 123-seat National Assembly, followed by 26 for the royalist Funcinpec party and 24 for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.

Despite winning 73 seats, the CPP still falls nine short of the two-thirds majority legally required to form a government on its own.

It was clear quickly after the July 27 vote that Hun Sen won, but the exact assembly breakdown had been left in doubt.
