Oz Business Community Asked To Help Preserve Great Barrier Reef - Comes Up With A Whole $500K
Big business has launched a new initiative to try to save the Great Barrier Reef from global warming.

Executives mingled with environmentalists at the appeal launched by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation in Sydney today.

The foundation has raised $500,000 from Australia's business community to map the reef in order to preserve healthy sections of it.

But the foundation's head, Dr John Schubert, who is also chairman of the Commonwealth Bank, says business needs to play an even bigger role. "I think we have a huge responsibility. If we allow the reef to be significantly damaged in our generation then I think that that doesn't augur well for the way we're looking after our kids and our kids' kids," he said.

Say, John, who was your choice for Prime Minister the last few elections?

Just asking.

2. The Commonwealth Bank has just posted an all-time record profit
They could have written the $500,000 cheque themselves (note that's Oz dollars -- about $390,000 US), especially since it would almost certainly be tax deductable.

On the other hand, the story says the appeal is only for a survey, for which $A500,000 would be a significant contribution. (No mention of the target amount.) And it has only just been launched, so more may be forthcoming. The OP's headline is a little misleading.
