Ambrose In Nairobi - Canada Doing A "Fantastic Job" On Climate Issues - Sun

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Environment Minister Rona Ambrose denies Canada is thwarting negotiations at the UN climate conference in Nairobi, saying she will play a positive role in talks to extend the Kyoto Protocol.

"Canada's here to be constructive, to show progress," Ambrose said in a brief scrum outside the conference hall. "Our delegation is doing a fantastic job on the ground, making progress and working with other countries on the key issues." Her reassurance came as environmentalists awarded Canada its second consecutive "fossil of the day" award for allegedly delaying the talks, along with the United States and Australia. The three countries were blamed for blocking progress on the new mechanism for technology transfer to poor countries.

Ambrose said the federal government is engaged in intensive negotiations with Canadian industry on cutting greenhouse emissions blamed for global warming, promising short-term targets by mid-January. But she did not relent on the government's position that Canada's Kyoto target -- a 6% cut in emissions from 1990 levels by 2012 -- is not achievable.

Steven Guilbeault of Greenpeace said it is difficult to accept Ambrose's claim that the target is not achievable "when one of the first things her government did when they came to power was to abolish pretty much anything that existed in terms of implementation measures."
