an auditorium on 43rd street for concerts and lectures.

4. The front of the building is carved with an inscription...

indicating it was built for the education of the working people, or something close to that. Seems a bit quaint and patronizing now but I think it was welcomed as an enlightened project at the time. Here's their site.
