1. Reminds me of a short story I once read

Where Aliens from another planet were observing Earth. They saw all the cars driving around, in all different shapes, colors, and sizes. They assumed this was the dominating life form on Earth. They also obvserved lots of smaller things moving to and from the life forms, entering briefly, then leaving again when the life form stopped. They assumed these were parasites of some kind... :)

2. Sounds similar to how "Ford Prefect" chose his earth-name...
