http://www.earthscan.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/566/v/3/sp/At the start of 2006 the world wind turbine market continues to be dominated by ten major companies, who together account for almost 100% of the total global market (Figure 1). While there are some new entrants on the horizon, for now the major companies continue to jockey amongst themselves for position. In this article we take a quick look at the major movers in the top ten, ask them for their predictions for the coming year, and also how they have been getting on in 2005.
In a further increase of their hold on the market, the top three suppliers increased their share of overall sales to 68% in 2004, a significant increase on the 54% they commanded in 2003. While the big three of Vestas, Gamesa and Enercon will continue to be important, resurgent giant GE had a great year in 2005 and expects even better results in 2006 and 2007 (indeed in 2005, GE has overtaken Enercon, installing 2400 MW to Enercon’s 1400 MW). Newly arrived Siemens (who bought the Bonus business) also did well, doubling its installations in 2005, thanks largely to the booming US wind industry. Thanks to this increased competition at the top, it seems likely that at least some of the top companies will shift position and the big three could see their dominance wane, or at least be forced to admit others to their circle.

Such is the boom in the US wind market that some analysts expect capacity there to reach 14,000 MW by 2007
