Abstract
BACKGROUND: Patients with certain autoimmune and allergic diseases, such as systemic lupus, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune thyroiditis or atopic eczema, often show increased lymphocyte stimulation by low doses of inorganic mercury in vitro. The patients often report clinical metal hypersensitivity, especially to nickel.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: In this study we examined the health impact of amalgam replacement in mercury-allergic patients with autoimmunity. The suitability of MELISA®, an optimized lymphocyte stimulation test, for the selection of susceptible patients and monitoring of sensitization was also examined. Amalgam fillings were replaced with composites and ceramic materials. Follow-up health status and lymphocyte reactivity were assessed and evaluated half a year or later following amalgam removal.
RESULTS: Results of lymphocyte reactivity measured with MELISA® indicate that in vitro reactivity after the replacement of dental amalgam decreased significantly to inorganic mercury, silver, organic mercury and lead. Out of 35 patients, 25 patients (71%) showed improvement of health. The remaining patients exhibited either unchanged health (6 patients, 17%) or worsening of symptoms (4 patients, 11%). The highest rate of improvement was observed in patients with multiple sclerosis, the lowest rate was noted in patients with eczema. The initial mercury-specific lymphocyte reactivity was significantly higher in the responder group, than in the non-responders, whose health was not improved by amalgam removal. All patients with health improvement after amalgam replacement showed reduced proliferation to inorganic mercury in follow-up MELISA®. In vitro responses to phenylmercury and nickel did not differ between the groups.
CONCLUSIONS: Mercury-containing amalgam may be an important risk factor for patients with autoimmune diseases. MELISA® is a valuable tool for selection of patients for amalgam replacement and also for monitoring of metal allergies.

1. Most with many chronic conditions recover after amalgam replacement
Dental Amalgam is the largest source of mercury in most people
http://home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/damspr1.html
(but fish is also a significant source and getting larger)
http://www.flcv.com/flhg.html

The mechanism by which dental amalgam causes over 40 chronic conditions is documented in the medical literature
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/indexa.html

and most with many of those conditions who undergo amalgam replacement and detox recover or get signif. better
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/hgremove.html

(over 60,000 cases documented here)

2. See the poisons inherent in the system.
There is a bill in Congress to ban amalgam fillings.
http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/Watson/watson.html

There are many sources of mercury in the environment (coal fired power plants)so producing a mercury free control group would be difficult.

Dentists are on the front lines of the class war, facing the poor who cannot afford treatment is the familiar story but they also face the upper class who find "toxins" disturbing their mood, energy, memory or any number of subjective symptoms.Toxins are the modern version of bad spirits, purification has been the pursuit of the upper class for a long time. The upper class love to "keep score" and "game the system" which is what politics is to them, easing the suffering of a toothache is just peasant.

Fear of the dentist is like fear of flying, being out of control is too much for some to take. Some want control so much they want to storm the cockpit and take over.Other people's needs are secondary to their own feelings, they want the feeling of safety as they steer the plane into a mountain.

In the past things like flying and dentistry would be miracles now they are cause for anxiety, privileges other people dream about are menacing threats,I am thankful for what I have and don't fear my time on this asteroid target.

3. Dentistry....
At one time - mercury was the cheap alternative to gold fillings - probably all some people could afford. After awhile - it got to be all that was offered until recently.

A similar professional fight over mercury raged in the dental community. The first mercury fillings were used in 1818. In 1840, the American Society of Dental Surgeons (ASDS) organized and required its members to sign pledges that they would not use mercury in their practice. That same year, 11 New York dentists were charged with malpractice for using mercury fillings. In 1859, after disputes within the ASDS, the American Dental Association (ADA) was founded and has aggressively promoted and defended the use mercury fillings since. Seven out of 10 dentists today are members of the ADA.

The dirty little secret in the dental community these days is that the ADA, some years ago, established a gag rule to forbid dentists, under penalty of loss of licensure, to inform their patients that mercury fillings could cause serious health problems and possibly death.

In the 1800's mercury+silver dental filling material (Amalgam) was developed, probably in Germany. Prior to that the only decent fillings were gold. The problem with gold was that it was difficult and took a lot of work to do and had to be done pretty well to work at all. That made it expensive. On the other hand, the new "amalgam" (which literally means "mixture") was quick and easy and could be done sloppily and yet still seemed to work. As a result fillings could be done very quickly and less expensively. The public was very happy to embrace it.

On the other hand, the organized dentists were against it. There were reports of health problems that were thought to be related to mercury use and the quality of these new fillings was often terrible plus many other related problems. Many dentists, and organized dentistry, in Germany, then England and finally in the US were almost up in arms against Amalgam use.

But since the public thought it was a bargain and seemed to do the job, they supported it and went to the dentists that offered it. McDentistry...? Sound familiar?

Anyway, those in the public as well as in the professional sectors that were against the use of amalgam fillings referred to it as "Quicksilver" fillings , from the common name of mercury, "quicksilver". After a time it became corrupted (?) into "Quacksilver fillings", then "Quacksilver" and finally, yes, you guessed it before my dramatic punchline..... The dentists that offered Quacksilver fillings were called ....Quacks !

I find that so fascinating, because now the ones... that don't offer amalgam fillings are sometimes lumped together and called quacks. That's it folks....

4. Interesting, since Quack is name that was given to those who use mercury
in dentistry, after the word Quicksilver, another word for mercury because of its extreme toxicity. Mercury is the most toxic substance people commonly come in contact with; the EPA water standard is 2 parts per billion- like a drop in a swimming pool.
It only takes 1/2 gram, the amount in a dental filling to poison all fish in a 10 acre lake to the extent that they are dangerous to eat.
And in the mouth, it continuously vaporizes, exposing the individual to high levels of mercury- average of 30 micrograms per day for those with several fillings. And thus is the leading cause of mercury in sewers, and thus a major source of mercury in fish and the environment, etc.

5. Actually I'm dubious of that etymology.
Webster's conflicts, saying it comes from Quack (crow) Salver (salve).

This whole area is full of conflicting studies from either side of the argument. My general inclination would be to replace amalgam fillings if you have the resources simply because they are most likely inferior to some of the newer materials.

Fortunately I need not worry about it -- good healthy teeth. I think I drew on my Scottish DNA for those.

6. Don't think you can find any credible study that mercury is not toxic
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 10:54 PM by philb
or that amalgam doesn't commonly cause significant adverse health effects.
Show me one. The DAMS web site has over 3000 peer-reviewed or Gov't studies that document that dental amalgam is the largest source of mercury in most people(as also supported by WHO, U.S. Dept.of Health
(ATSDR), other country health agencies, etc.
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/damspr1.html
and commonly causes over 40 chronic health conditions(the mechanisms of causality are documented by the studies)
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/indexa.html
as well as that most who replace amalgam and do detox are cured or get significantly better
(DAMS has documentation on over 60,000 clinical cases of such)
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/hgremove.html

and dental amalgam is documented to the largest source of mercury in sewers and sewer sludge and thus a major source in water bodies, fish, wildlife, the atmosphere(mercury in sludge is methylated by soil bacteria and outgased),etc. ; and municipal sewer agencies confirm that the average person with several amalgams have huge exposure- resulting in 30 micrograms per day down the sewers in excretion. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/damspr2f.html

and even the American Dental Association has provided documentation to the FDA supporting the above:

7. I questioned only the etymology of "Quack."

...none of the other material.
