Japan's Hokuriku Electric to build LNG tank, berth
(Reuters) - Northwest Japan utility Hokuriku Electric Power Co said on Wednesday it will build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank and receiving terminal in Toyama Prefecture, as it prepares to start operating its first gas-fired power generation unit.

The utility in October announced that it would launch its first gas-fired unit, with generating capacity of about 400 megawatts, aiming to start operation in the 2018/19 April-March financial year.

Hokuriku Electric initiated the project, estimated to cost more than 100 billion yen ($1.28 billion), to diversify its sources of fossil fuels.

Under the project, the ageing 250 MW oil-fired unit at the Toyama-Shinko plant will be scrapped and one of the plant's 500 MW oil-fired units will be reconfigured to burn gas. ($1 = 78.070 Japanese Yen) (Reporting by Osamu Tsukimori; Editing by Edmund Klamann)
