Radiation leaked from three-quarters US nuclear facilities

I'm glad the press has started asking the right questions and doo some digging.

Fears are rising as steadily as the Missouri River is flooding areas of nuclear power plants these days as new studies and reports about America's nuclear facilities prove harm their radiation is causing people and about unresolved safety hazards under which the plants operate. Water tests around 37 of the 104 United States nuclear facilities contained radioactive concentrations exceeding U.S. drinking water standard according to the Associated Press new study. Sometimes, radiation in the drinking water was hundreds of times over limit.

Dangerous radiation has leaked from three-quarters of all U.S. nuclear power stations yet people have not been warned about this in most cases. The country's water supplies not already contaminated could be one day in the not too distant future if the situation is not turned around.

The number and severity of radiation leaks has increased because there many old and unsafe plants across America, a the new Associated Press investigation claims.

1. "Doo" some digging is right, given that this is shit.
The source, the "Examiner," is a free propaganda paper run by an ultra-right-wing billionaire. Think of it as the Daily Koch.

6. If you linked to the AP, they might at least get the facts right.
Such as basic information about the low danger level of tritium.

5. That's 25% less radiation leakage than every coal plant in the world
Pretty good improvement.

100% of coal plants "leak" huge quantities (over 5 tons per year) of radiation into the air or dump the radioactive material into open pits -- no government regulations, nobody checking on it, etc. Congress recently blocked any attempts to look into toxic and radioactive emissions from coal.

75% of nuclear power plants "leak" an unknown quantity (certainly far less than 5 tons).

Which one would YOU like to live next door to?

9. Nonsense replies - you know the difference between fact and fiction
I gave you facts. It's not my problem that you choose to ignore them or that you are for some unknown reason attempting to deny those facts.

8. No way would I want to live next door to a nuke plant
If I had my druthers I'd go for a solar, or geothermal, hydro or gas but not coal or NUCLEAR thats for sure.

11. I agree with you 100%
My post was in response to the misuse of facts by the OP.

It sounds terrible when you say that 75% of nuclear plants have at some time or another leaked radiation (in some amount), due to some condition outside of their normal operation such as human error or equipment failure.

But it sounds far worse to my ears that each and every coal plant spews out radioactive material every day it operates, as part of its normal operating procedures. And the Republican-controlled House just blocked an EPA effort to start treating coal's deadly waste as hazardous materials.

When given the range of choices posed in your post, however, I absolutely agree. I'd rather live next door to any of the renewable energy sources than either coal or nuclear plants. I simply believe that ending coal and all fossil fuels is the first step we must take, then we can begin to safely end nuclear.
