Photos: Rare white kiwi chick

Hundreds traveled to the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre in New Zealand last weekend to see the tiny white kiwi chick that was born in captivity May 1. Why is this chick so special? It's not albino; it's the product of recessive genes of brown North Island kiwis that were brought to the center's captive bird program, according to the wildlife center. The chick's name is Manukura -- and it already has its own Facebook page.

2. I thought kiwis became extinct about 100 years ago. Nice to see I was wrong.

4. The Takahe was thought to be extinct but was rediscovered in a remote area of the South Island
Kiwis are rare on both main islands - but the NZ DOC has established populations of the little brown kiwi on Kapati Island (just north of Wellington) and there is a good population on Steward Island.

I saw the North Island Brown Kiwi at the Kauri forest on the North Island and the Steward Island Kiwi - they make a racket at night and run like cartoon critters....lol

Love the chick.

June 2: An extremely rare bright blue lobster was caught off the coast of Canada's Prince Edward Island. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
