Fairewinds Calls for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Delay Licensing Until Fukushima Lessons Are Evaluated

Gundersen implores Congress and NRC to think outside the box. Pause licensing of new nukes and 20-year-life extensions until the lessons learned from Fukushima are applied. Fairewinds Associates recommends that regulators look at the feasibility of emergency evacuation plans, containment leakage, and aging management plans for 40-year-old Fukushima model reactors.

1. Agree
Fukushima offers a chance to make major strides in safety and will lead to proactive solutions in nuclear energy plants. There's an awful lot of learning available by studying Fukushima. Most of which, fortunately, have already been implemented since Fukushima went online.

It would be wonderful if all the older model plants forty years old could be quickly replaced with newer, safer models.

2. lol pushing the "safe" brand new spanking nuke plant meme
total fail because the costs far outweigh the value, they are uninsurable and the industry is corrupt and feeding off government subsidies.

3. I'm not pushing "safe"
I am pushing "safer". I wish I could proclaim any energy production safe, but as yet, none are.

I want all plants, nuclear and others, to be as safe as possible. I think we can always make things safer and better.

Learn from Fukushima. Adjust plants to make them safer.

You may now continue your crusade.

4. No reason to ever build another nuclear power plant, they are too expensive and dirty.

5. You have it half-right
We should replace them, but not with new reactors.
It's cheaper to replace them with wind turbines.
It's even cheaper to not replace them, but to replace old energy-hog appliances with new energy-efficient appliances.
Safer and cheaper.
Why bother with dangerous dirty expensive unnecessary nuclear energy?
