AAA: Cost of driving has risen 3.4% (yoy), study finds
The average annual cost to own and operate a sedan in the USA, based on 15,000 miles of driving, rose 1.9 cents per mile to 58.5 cents per mile, or $8,776, says AAAs 2011 Your Driving Costs study.

The increased costs to own and operate a vehicle were driven mainly by large increases in fuel prices, depreciation costs and tire prices, says John Nielsen, AAA national director of auto repair, buying and consumer programs.

1. Averages like that don't mean as much
as you'd like them to.

I drive a Honda Civic. I haven't exactly calculated my costs per mile, but I strongly suspect it's less than the average quoted. And I bet those who drive large SUVs have a much higher per mile cost.

And what does yoy stand for?

2. "yoy" == "year on year": "change over previous year"
