Remember that Oil in the Gulf? It's Still There...
From DeSmogBlog - http://desmogblog.com/remember-oil-gulf-mexico-its-still-there

As we approach the one year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and the subsequent oil disaster that followed, residents on the Gulf Coast are still finding their beaches covered in oil.

Residents of Perdido Key, Florida were recently treated to a few thousand pounds of “tar mats” washing ashore, which prompted BP to quickly send out clean up crews during a busy spring break season for local resorts. Residents and beachgoers did their best to overlook the dark spots on their vacations, and were laying out and playing in the water just a few feet away from the oncoming oil. The Perdido removal has so far been the only instance where BP has removed a large tar mat.

Elsewhere in Florida, four other tar mats have popped up between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach, with cleanup efforts in those areas remaining slow. County officials are growing increasingly impatient with BP, forcing County Administrator Charles Oliver to send a letter to BP requesting immediate assistance. BP had announced, and the beaches accepted, that they would be scaling back their cleanup operations in Florida in February, since the only oil coming on shore was in the form of small tar balls.

Louisiana and Alabama have not been unscathed either, as both areas are still experiencing tar balls washing up on a daily basis. Louisiana could be in for an even harder hit, as Coast Guard officials have reported a large oil sheen stretching about 100 miles hovering dangerously close to Louisiana...

2. I KNOW It NEVER Went Away!! I Live Half Way Down The West Coast Of Florida
and Mote Marine has seen AND analyzed fish that have been caught with BP oil in their guts! I've told my story many times here on DU, but simply because I think it's seriously important I will tell it again. And anytime it happens to come up in the future. I WILL NOT eat any local fish and even though I can ride my bike to the beach, I worry about actually going into the water. Perhaps that's a stupid idea to some, but I'm just not sure it's not still toxic in some way.

Here goes... AGAIN! My son-in-law works as a critical care nurse at Memorial Hospital in Sarasota. He started telling me about patients that were coming into the ER with terrible rashes. Not only did it cause a lot of pain, they didn't seem to be able to find anything that would clear it up or control the problem. Kids were especially problematic and suffered a lot. I haven't talked to him about it lately, but we did discuss it often.

THERE IS GOOP (corexit) that sank to the bottom and I've also seen more shells washing up on the beach than they have in many, many years. Which tells ME that this stuff must have killed the bottom feeding mussels and other plant life. Certainly the tourists were quite happy to "find" these nice shells, but the sad reality is that the STUFF killed them!! It's still there, even way down here and I presume it will be there for ages to come!

And BP is off and away without a 2nd look back. Now we have RICK SCOTT, who supports offshore drilling and HE doesn't give a S--t!
:nuke: :grr:

4. Why would anyone care what happens to us parasites?
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 03:02 PM by CrossChris
Unfortunately, that's how we have to start thinking. The powers that be think of us as parasites. They weep for our deaths as much as we weep for the deaths of microscopic organisms.

The next time tragedy hits your neck of the woods, the government is going to figure out how to vilify you before they figure out how to save you. That's just the way their cost/benefit analysis works. That's the lesson I learned from Katrina, and BP.

Time to adapt to the new age.

5. Japan Earthquake
I did read somewhere that the water table on the Gulf Coast of Florida increased by around 3 inches. If the earthquake in Japan could do that, why couldn't the earthquake cause the buried oil to rise to the surface again?

I stopped eating Gulf seafood last summer. Actually, I haven't seen any Gulf shrimp in the stores recently. I certainly won't go in the water.

Of course, the media isn't going to report any of this because we can't scare away the snowbirds, or stop them from eating Gulf seafoods. Most locals know better.
