Temperature at reactor No 1 way above its operating limit

TOKYO - Rising temperatures around the core of one of the reactors at Japan's quake-crippled nuclear plant sparked new concern yesterday and more water was required to cool it down, the plant's operator said.

Despite hopes of progress in managing the nuclear crisis, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it needed more time before it could say the reactors were stabilised.

Technicians working inside an evacuation zone around the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant have attached power cables to all six reactors and started a pump at one to cool overheating nuclear fuel rods.

But smoke and steam were seen rising from reactors No 2 and No 3. There have been several blasts of steam from the reactors during the crisis, which experts say probably released a small amount of radioactive particles.

1. I heard that it will be necessary to keep hosing these reactors for years...
I forget where, BBC news? Can anybody confirm whether or not this is going to be the case?

3. "there have been several blasts of steam from the reactors"
I think the second explosion was a blast of steam.
