Town combats dutch elm disease with public art.

TRURO About a quarter of Truro's street-side tree sculptures have been removed during the past few years due to rot and more will follow suit in the coming years.

"We knew that it wouldn't last forever," Truro tree committee chairman Don Cameron said this week. "We expected to get 20 to 30 years, whereas we're probably only looking at 10 to 15 or maybe 20 for some."

The sculptures started in 1999 as a way to deal with the number of trees infected with Dutch elm disease and as a way to slow the spread of the disease to healthy elms. The affected trees were generally between 100 and 175 years old and represented some of the landmark trees that are seen lining Truro's streets in old postcards from the 1930s.

Bob Seger - Like A Rock

Snoopy. Sargent Shultz "I know nothing"

I was 'lean' and solid everywhere. (<-before being liquid or vaporous.)
My hands were steady, my eyes clear and bright.
My walk had purpose, my steps quick and light.
And I held firmly to what I felt was right.
I was strong as I could be, like a rock, nothing ever got to me.
I was something to see. (<-before being unseen.)
Stood arrow straight.

I still believe in my dreams.

When I am bathed in the fire light, the moon comes calling ghostly white, I re call, I re call.
Standing Arrow Straight
Charging from the gate, Like a rock, carrying the weight.

Sun against my skin (<- day walker reference.)
I see myself again. (<- day walker reference.)

And I will have beer and travel money and many experiences.

Staying behind to get the rest out, I respect that.
