Bees in a Bell Jar
We have been greatly worried about the fate of bees lately. So when I found this, I felt compelled to post it.

Bees make a hive in a big jar.

The bees got a little help -- the beekeeper stuck a few strips of starter comb in the jar. But the rest is the bees' craft alone.

Stephen C. Fleming is the source of the photos, the jar, and the bees.

1. A good educational post for children.
A picture is worth a thousand words.

2. instantly stolen for my entomology class....
Nice series of photos. I'm surprised it didn't get too hot inside the glass jar, however.

4. Fascinating, but this is not really a "hive in a jar".
It is an extension of a hive into a jar.
The bell jar was undoubtedly covered by a box which was only removed for photos.
The bees wouldn't build comb in direct sunlight.

We started BeeKeeping in 2006.
We currently have two healthy colonies in our back yard, and are endlessly fascinated by the collective intelligence of "The Hive".

I may try something like this next Spring.
Excellent for photographs.
