Gigantic solar project planned by german top companies
On July 13, leading german and european companies officially founded a consortium to plan, build and operate a giantic network of thermal solar energy plants in the deserts of North Africa and the ME, that could supply 15% of Europes electricity in the (not so far) future.
The Project called DESERTEC would cost an estimated 400 billion Euros (560 bn $) and would include a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system to transfer the energy to Europe.
This project seems to be quite credible, since the consortium comprises some of the top companies in the fields of technology, energy and finance, many of them beeing world leaders, for example Siemens, EON, RWE, Munich Re, Deutsche Bank, ABB, MAN Solar Millenium, Schott.
I am a little bit surprised, that these plans, that gained a lot of attention in german media, are almost completely disregarded in american media.
