In the California Air Resources Board (ARB) hearing on the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, the ARB staff insisted that they looked at the indirect carbon effects of oil but couldn’t find any. In a recent post on this blog, I suggested that they should subscribe to National Geographic Magazine. But that isn’t the only news outlet where they could find evidence of indirect effects. This morning’s EE News had links to several stories detailing indirect effects caused by petroleum. Here they are:

Yesterday’s New York Times had a story about One of the examples listed is a $27 billion lawsuit for oil pollution in the Ecuadorian Jungle. That lawsuit was the subject of the recent 60 Minutes episode .

1. The 60' story was extremely disheartening ... now Chinese oil companies
are running the operations, with just the sort of safety and environmental safeguards Chinese industry is justly famous for. :sarcasm: The 60' crew came across a major pipeline leak while traveling to get to an interview.

2. the affects to the land aren't limited to the immediate area of the drilling site but include
the runoff from the ponds into the streams - and how far does the affect of the runoff go? Does anybody know.

And of course, once roads are carved into the rainforest illegal logging quickly follows - even if the area does not hold enough oil to drill. The roads are still there and the felling of trees begins.

The California Air REsources board "said" they looked at land affects of oil and couldn't find any. (I think the "looking' they did was at each other and they said "Naw, there aren't any land impacts to exploring and drilling for oil).

They also might consider the land affects of developing the tar sands of Canada - which we will be importing more of if the price of gas stays high enough for it to be worht the high price of oil tar sands oil.

NO affects to land from using oil, a Real "Scientific" conclusion.
