Nuclear plant sold for scrap
Nuclear plant sold for scrap

THE Bataan nuclear power plant, which never produced a single watt of electricity but cost taxpayers $155,000 a day for more than 30 years, has been sold for scrap for $2.859 million.

A project of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the plant in Morong, Bataan, was completed in 1984 at a cost of $2.3 billion on a debt of $1.06 billion.

The plant—which later was found to have been overpriced and unsafe—was mothballed after Marcos was overthrown in 1986, but the debt payments on it continued until April 2007.

<snip>

The Bataan power plant was first put on the auction block in April 2005, but the government has not found a buyer for it until now.

Fortunately, the plant was never fueled, so the scrap metal should be safe for re-use.

2. Instead of which, of course, they became a renewable paradise...
...getting all thier power from wind and solar. Oh, wait, they both come up as zero. Ah well, at least they use biomass. That's renewable, isn't it?

Ecotopia, here we come!

4. Really? What do they do with those wind plants that blow to pieces and fail?
Oh I know, they let them fall in the ocean, where they can leach lubricants, unremarked by you, endlessly.

In fact, the world's nuclear plants operating over the last 50 years have produced more primary energy than any other form of climate change gas free energy.

But because your paranoia ONLY consists of selective attention, you feel that you can mention this in hoping of destroying existing infrastructure that works better than any of your bourgeois toys, so dangerous fossil fuels can replace them.

I note, with due contempt, that after you cheered for earthquake that damaged the Japanese reactors last year - killing no one - you had not a fucking word to say about people who died from the dangerous fossil fuels that replaced them.

The reliability of nuclear power overall world wide makes all the stuff that you don't care about still less reliable than nuclear.

The fact that you are referring to actions that took place 30 years ago demonstrates conclusively that you are basically a conservative, having not produced an original or new idea in your entire tenure on this website.

Also Basically, your position is one of an arsonist who loves to remark on the wonderful scrap opportunities represented by the scrap copper left after fires.

Heckuva job.

7. Seriously, NNadir
"With due contempt?"

That's your way to win respect for your own point of view?

8. Actually, it was NNadir and the pro-nukes who were cheering on the earthquake
Edited on Thu Apr-23-09 10:26 PM by bananas
Frankly, it was disgusting behaviour - and a DUer in Japan called him on it: "It's easy to joke about something so far away"

You'll see other pro-nukes in that thread cheering on the earthquake saying "So bloody what? They're designed to take it."
Wrong - the earthquake was larger than the plant was designed for.
And that fault is capable of generating much larger earthquakes.

10. Please keep referencing those threads which, when read from top to bottom,
make you and yours look like an even BIGGER bunch of idiots.

It makes me laugh, and laughing is good for the soul. :D

11. Thanks for providing an example of how full of shit NNadir is.
Almost two years later, the reactors are still offline,
and pro-nukes are still laughing and cheering on the earthquake.
