Honda has a new budget-priced hybrid

The concept version of Honda's Insight debuts Oct. 2 at the 2008 Paris International Auto Show.
By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY

Honda (HMC) revealed the look and name Thursday of its new hybrid-only car to go on sale in the U.S. next spring. It is expected to be one of the cheapest cars in the next generation of gas-electric hybrids.

"They will crack the under-$20,000 barrier," predicts John O'Dell, senior editor of Edmund's Green Car Advisor. "It's a new generation of a more affordable hybrid."

REVIEW: Fuel-cell Clarity has tantalizing future, James R. Healey says

It will be called the Insight, reviving the name of the first hybrid in the U.S., sold here by Honda from 1999 to 2006. A concept version of the new Insight, of which a photo was released Thursday, will be unveiled next month at the 2008 Paris International Auto Show....

Even though my Civic is still in fine shape.

6. I know, I have a 10 year old Acura Integra
and it's still awesome! I want to get a hybrid fit to drive, and
keep the Integra to drive only sometimes...so it stays awesome.

7. The "trouble" with buying cars like ours is that they're so damn reliable they
last forever! ;) Not that I want my Civic to die. She's going on 10 and she's awesome. Still, a hybrid Fit is going to be awfully tempting.

2. The back end of that car seems strangely familiar...

Honda seems to have a case of Prius envy.

3. Aerodynamics is universal.
Really, it says something about human irrationality that most cars don't look almost exactly alike. There would be only a few widely-used shapes if aerodynamics took precedence instead of the "Design department"

5. Maybe this will drop prices overall for hybrids
Seems like the Prius usually sells for above list around these parts, more supply and a little price competition from Honda should help more people make the leap to more fuel efficient vehicles.
