Hoffa calls for greens, unions to team up
East Bay Business Times
Jim Hoffa, president of the Teamsters union, called for a stronger alliance between labor unions and environmentalists in a speech in Oakland on Wednesday.
Hoffa, who leads the
International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said drilling for offshore oil won't solve the United States' energy problems -- "not here and not in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," according to text of his speech supplied by the Teamsters.
"If we are to prosper as a nation, our future lies in a green economy," he said, calling for more work on alternative energy sources as a way to counteract ever-rising oil prices. He said development of solar, wind and geothermal power would create more union jobs and revitalize the economy.

Greg Haegele, director of conservation at the
Sierra Club, praised Hoffa's remarks and said, "We are proud to stand here today, as allies and friends of the Teamsters."
