Nigerian youths blow up oil pipeline, output cut
ABUJA (Reuters) - Armed youths blew up a Nigerian crude oil pipeline operated by U.S. major Chevron, a militant group said on Saturday, cutting more output from the world's eighth largest oil exporter.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said it was contacted by youths claiming responsibility for Thursday's attack on Chevron's Abiteye-Olero crude pipeline and commended their action.

1. Who is behind all of this?
A few of us who have been around the block were marveling at yesterday's raid on the offshore rig.

While a pipeline is easy, that rig was one hard target.

There is some serious money, talent and training behind this business.

5. I don't think anyone needs to be behind it
AK47s and RPG are easy enough to get hold of in Africa - the rest is just attitude and planning. Guerrilla warfare has caught out everyone from Hannibal to Hitler, and I don't see any reason why Shell should be exempt.

My understanding of the platform attack is that they didn't do that much damage - it was just the shock of MEND turning up 75 miles off-shore that's freaked everybody out.
