North Iowa harvests the wind

GARNER — The steel giants dot the North Iowa landscape, producing economic benefits for landowners and a renewable source of electricity for Iowans as well as customers outside the state.

Iowa currently ranks third in the nation in wind energy production right behind Texas and California with more than 1,000 wind turbines capable of producing nearly 1,000 megawatts of electricity annually.

Several companies have also built facilities to manufacture wind turbines or turbine blades in Iowa.

“Iowa has been one of the leading states in attracting industry,” Makila said.
