It took five years and two tries from a pair of restaurant co-owners who wanted to harness the wind for energy and education.

The Outer Banks Brewing Station got permission Wednesday night to install a wind turbine, a first for a restaurant in this area.

The Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners voted 3-1 to allow wind turbines on a case-by-case basis in the commercial district, as long as they meet a set of standards. That vote included a change of heart from one commissioner.

Commissioner Robert Woodard voted against the plan in 2003. "I will be the first to admit... that I was against it," he said just before Wednesday's vote. "I will support this. It's time we take a step forward and be on the cutting edge.
