I vividly remember when the Boston Globe had a 50 or pages
of help wanted ads. I found two of my best paying jobs ever through ads in the Globe.

It is now years later and I am an over the hill Senior with no prospects. Oh, how times have changed.

Actually, I am one of those who gave up. Come what may, the world has no place for me.

It is not that I am not capable, it is that so many more are more capable than I.

Don't get old, it stinks from many levels.

There are millions like me. In the workforce for decades, now considered outdated and expendable.

1. I think I understand how you feel. On the bright side: you'll have SS and Medicare, and I won't.
(the way things are going)

5. Goddamiit! Fight back!
Search this site for "deficit commission" and/or "catfood commission" to start with.

2. The local fishwrap used to have 2 full sections of help wanted ads
every Sunday. Now it's four or five pages, a quarter of them out of state.

4. Ours is only a page and a half
And two thirds of the ads are fake ones posted by the trade schools fooling those unlucky enough into thinking there's this huge demand for medical assistants and medical billing specialists. However you look at all the local jobs wanted postings every day on craigslist and you see over two dozen graduates from all those schools begging for any type of work.

The rest of the ads and/or the only real jobs are either selling Kirby vacuums or exotic dancers.

Occasionally you'll see an ad for a dishwasher or janitor but they require a resume with cover letter, a two page essay telling them why they should hire you, five years of continuous, verifiable employment, ten personal references and a drug and FBI screening.

3. Getting old is better than the alternative, although I have to
admit that is just a theory as no one has returned from the dead to tell me otherwise. I turn 60 on Sunday Nov 7th. Also check out www.seniorcorps.org .

Hang onto your sense of humor. You'll need it.
