Consumer Confidence, Industrial Production both fall unexpectedly

The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index for April declined to 93.2 from 95.8, reflecting higher energy prices and more frequent attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq. The median estimate was for an increase to 97, according to a survey of 52 economists by Bloomberg News.

U.S. industrial production fell 0.2 percent in March, the Fed said today. Production was forecast to rise for a sixth month in seven, by 0.3 percent, according to the median estimate of 67 economists in a Bloomberg survey.
