Dow Jones executives get white powder mail

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three executives at News Corp's Dow Jones & Co headquarters received envelopes containing white powder and another 10 were discovered in the mail room, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.

The building contains Dow Jones as well as its Wall Street Journal daily business newspaper. The New York Police Department and New York Fire Department's Hazmat teams are at the building, spokesman Robert Christie said.

The 11th floor is where News Corp Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and Wall Street Journal Managing Editor Robert Thomson have offices. Thomson was not in the building at the time. Murdoch's whereabouts are unknown.

Christie declined to say which executives got the envelopes. The 11th floor was evacuated, he said.

The New York Police Department found three envelopes on the 11th floor of the building's headquarters, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. Both contained white powder.

"We have had many of these in the last year and they typically are talcum powder or cornstarch," he said.

1. I remember when the local courthouse was closed because of
a powder scare.

It turned out that a cop had eaten a powdered donut at one of the clerk's desk before she made it in that morning - he left some powdered sugar behind and she was freaked.

I kid you not.

we are a beach town, souvenir stores all over the place sell sea shells and sand dollars and the like.

the downtown post office was closed for hours, customers and patrons and employees were trapped inside until the guys in the hazmat suits could determine what the source of the white powder found in the mail bin.

It turned out to be the powdered remains of a sand dollar that had been crushed in the mailing process.
